This is my first big v-twin non-metric, so I need a little advice. How often should you change the oil and service these monsters; every 2500 miles or 5000 miles? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I'm thinking to change fluids every 3K miles, (roughly 5k Km.). Just done one service so far as the bike came with 800 miles (so they said) when I bought it.

I am used to do services in my previous bikes every 5000 Km.

I am interested also in knowing what mileage the majority of members here do before changing fluids.

I was changing mine at 2,500 but started to realize that the oil was still clean. I am at 3,000 now on my current oil and it still looks good. I will take it to 4,000 and change it. There are many members here that change at every 5,000.

if you are in a hot climate with lots of traffic, you should certainly consider changing the fluids more often since the added heat breaks down the oil's protection abilities. with the scoots, you don't have the advantage of having an engine compartment to help keep dirt and dust out of the breather so more chance of contamination through the intake.

If your running synthetic oil you can go every 5000 miles. Regular oil every 2500 miles. This for the motor and 5000 miles for the primary and transmisson
Thats what I was told by the bigdog dealer in 2006. And what Tom added should also be consider also.

I change mine at 5000 miles. I use the "service" function on the Dakota Digital to monitor it. I'm over 91,000 miles on my bike and its been running fine

2500 miles on motor oil with Dakota digital set @ 2500 as a reminder. But, I use an oil scavenger so I actually change it anywhere up to 3000 miles. The rest of the fluids get changed at 5000 miles. You can get the scavenger from MadDog Don.

I change my engine and primary every 2500 miles. Synethetic in the transmission, so every 5000 miles. The biggest thing i'm told is to change the oil before you store it for the winter. Clean oil prevents condensation from being a factor.

"Clean oil prevents condensation from being a factor". How about educating an old dumbass. What's in the used oil that collects water that's not in the new oil. Carbon? Reason I'm asking is I start the spring off with new oil.

I use Amsoil and was changing the oil every 2500 which i found to be a waste of money. The oil was clean when I darined it, so I started to change it every 5000. At 5000 the oil still looks good but I would not push it. If you are using dino then 2500-3000 sounds about right. The oil these days are alot better then in the pass. They don't break down as fast. I change the primary and tranny at the same time. Then I do the forks every other time.
