How much oil does your Dog burn?

Did a search, but didn't get any results on the question as to how much oil usage is considered normal for the S&S 117 engine. My 2008 K-9 has 2200 miles on it and appears to be using approx. 1/4 quart per 1000 miles. I've been using standard 20W-50 but plan to switch to Mobil 1 at my 2500 mile checkup. Does this oil usage sound normal? Thanks.

I used 1/3 qt from Daytona, FL to Bremerton, WA during my cross country trip (about 5000 miles).
On my Sturgis trip about the same (about 3500 miles).
Amsoil since the 500 mile change.

Practically all internal combustion engines use oil to some degree. You will know once it becomes excessive.

mine uses about 1/3 quart every 2500 miles, although it did seem to go down in this amount since I started using the Seafoam in the oil. Also helped with the top end noise a little too.

Never check it. When I change the oil, there is plenty inside the tank, so I guess I'm good. Change every 2,000 miles anyway. Not even sure I could tell looking into the tank if I was 1/3 guart low!

How much oil would a big dog burn if a big dog did burn oil.....hmmmmmmm.

Most engines use a little oil when new. I have 9100 miles on my 117 and I haven't added any oil since my 5000 mile service. I also use Mobil 1 V-twin full syn. Not sure what would be normal usage for a new 117. If it keeps using oil I would ask the dealer.

I guess you could think of it in percentages. So, if you went through about a third of a quart (a little over 10 ounces), one would lose about 10 ounces of oil per oil change, that’s if you changed your oil every 2500 - 3000 miles and oil loss remained linear.
Three quarts = 96 ounces. You lose approx 10% of your oil capacity per oil change. No big deal I guess.

Now, I would think that if one was losing 8 ounces per 1000 miles; that seems like a bit much. If the loss remained linear, you would lose 24 ounces in a 3000 mile service interval. If the loss remained constant, one would see a loss in total oil capacity of 25% over 3000 miles.

I know when I change my oil using the oil scavenger; I get approximately 24 ounces or so of crap oil out before the oil looks clean. My guess is that there is about that much oil in the lines; pump, cam case and oil filter housing, etc.

Having said that, if I was losing 8 ounces every 1000 miles, I would not let it go too long. Figuring the numbers above, there would only be a little over a quart in the tank before a 3000 mile service. That doesn't leave much for heat transfer.

I wish I had read this before that last Jack & Coke. Sounds reasonable:D

You are still in the break in period. My K9 used a little during that time.
I switched to amsoil at 5k and I'm now over 10k and haven't used any

I have not used any oil in the last 2100 miles. I am due for an oil change probably next week. I have not noticed any oil usage on my bike since I got it. Before the valve guides went out, it used to blow some smoke from time to time:D , but not enough to show up in the oil tank.

I would say that a quart every 1000 miles is excessive!

I've got a 124" S&S in my 07 K9 and have 4100 miles. I changed oil 3 times and never had to add any oil between changes. Using Amsoil 20W50 syn.

I used a quart and a half in the first 5000 miles. Thought I had engine problems. Dealer assured me it would stop using oil. 38K on the motor and I can't see any drop on the stick changing every 5K using Amsoil 20W50. Some motors use oil during breakin.
