How many miles did your Baker 6speed last ?

Sounds to me like Baker might have changed suppliers sometime in 2005, and started seeing some issues with them. Seems they might not have caught the problem until 2008.

Might be a interesting to keep this going and do a cause failure analysis on this.
Rubwhore has the inside scoop on all this. When my mainshaft broke, he said that in '05, BDM had changed suppliers for the mainshaft and the company they went with did not properly heat treat the shafts, or not as good as the previous company anyway. '05 is also the year the BDM began integrating proprietary parts as apposed to using Harley aftermarket parts. There were a lot of recalls for '05 and later. Also, the dreaded TP rocker boxes were used that year and part of '06 before they realized their mistake and went back to using S&S.

7,500 miles countershaft moved and stuck in third gear. Sent back to Baker and now have 17,000 miles and no problems.

Somewhere over 23-24k on it with no problems at all on tranny. Change the tranny oil every other oil change (about 5-6K) using simple ole RevTek Tranny oil.

03 Chopper; 16K and doing fine. I'm not the original owner so I can't say for sure on anything from 8100 - zero miles...currently do have an occasional "slip" in 2nd gear that I need to tend to.

You can get slipping in the higher gears due to the transmission. The reason is that as the helical cut gears side load the shaft. Once the bearing has enough wear the entire gear set will walk inside the case under load. This pushes the entire clutch, gear, shaft assy to the point that the clutch starts to slip the same way it would if you rode the clutch lever.
Simply put it walks entire imput shaft assy into the clutch push rod ....which in turn acts the same as you pulling in the clutch lever under load.

I rebuilt Postmans transmission last year for far less than the 1700 he was quoted from another shop. He ended up bringing it to our shop in NC from TN. :)

Bobby, is there an easy way to determine if the helical gears are worn? Can they be seen if you pop the top cover? Reason I ask is I have slippage which I assumed was the clutch, but I do notice it the most in 4th gear.

Thors, I would first try to adjust the clutch and check your fluids. The gears are not normaly worn...99% of the rebuilds I do all stem from the bearings wearing out due to the side load force put on them by the helical cut gears. The gears are of good quality and have to either be run dry, or have metal from one of the bearings, forks, etc to have excessive wear on them.

If you still have slippage after the adjustment then dig further. Take off the primary cover and pull the clutches, steels, and clutch carrier out. Check for any burned clutches, warped steels, or damage to the clutch carrier. If that looks good then loosen the drive belt and check the input shaft on the trans for any movement. If it moves then the trans has bad bearings and will need a rebuild.

Call or PM me if you need any help.

Thanks Bobby and will do. I just got back from a quick ride and I'm pretty sure it's slipping in all gears. I seem roll right into the torque curve whenever I'm hittin it in fourth so makes sense. I have to switch my rocker boxes over and replace my compression releases so I guess I'll just tackle the clutch while she's down.

8600 miles on my 05 and no issues knock on wood! I have changed the tranny fluid 4-5 times with the Redline Pink Milkshake stuff.

My 05 Chopper has over 91,000 miles now and the transmission has never been opened up. Wondering how much more it will go.
Sent a message to Baker about it but never got an answer. So i just ride the hell out of it :)
