How many miles can you do

How many miles can you do in one day on your Big Dog? I am thinking about going to Sturgis and it's 1800 there. I want to do this in two days on my 02 Pit-bull. What do you think?

900 miles a day, 2 days straight takes determination on any motorcycle but can be done. A lot of guys here have done 1000 in a day. All depends how much you like riding and how bad you want to get there.

Another round please
I think your nuts. :roll:That would kill my 48 year old body. You would need a very nice pad for the ass and have your luggage set up so you could lean back on it for the best possible riding position. Best of luck. Your a better man than I.

900 in a day will take a lot out of you. By time you get to the end of your ride each day it will be at least 12 hours of hard riding. Can be done, but you'll be whipped when you get to Sturgis. Might better plan an extra day riding and split it into 3 600 mile days. That way if you feel like riding more you still can....

Do as many as you can the 1st day. plan your stops 125 and its easy to do. The walk in to pay gas or to just relax 5 min stops every 1.5 hours and you might be suprised what you can do. 18 hours straight was easy for me 1010 miles with two 1 hour breaks. Just know when you travel that far its easy to pack your cool weather/wet weather/flippin hot weather gear wrong. Always on top of gear.
Always have a backup plan :bang:Thanks 05Chop
in case pup gets sick

HD.com has a great plan a ride site and shows gas stations and hotels too. It also shows HD Shops but some just wont help:loony:

OR you can be like Raywood and never pay for anything on a long trip :roll::roll::roll::roll::roll:

I have done 500 miles in one day and 300 the next day. It wasn't bad.......but I stopped every 80 miles and took a smoke break. I would not even try 900 a day, would take the fun out of the ride for me. Time schedule would be to tight and couldn't enjoy myself.

Tell you what brother! Keep me posted on your plans and I will either meet you around the St.Louis area and help you finish off the ride by riding with you or we can trailer the rest of the way? Two pits will fit good in the back of my pick-up!

Did 600 a day on the Roadking to Sturgis in 2000, it was hell, not sure if I could make it on the Ridgeback but would be willing to give it a try if anyone's willing to go with me.

Did about 750 one day coming back from Asheville NC in 100 degree heat. Spent the entire next day indoors with the shades closed, tunes on and a bottle of Gentleman Jack.:2thumbs:

I try to lay out a trip in 400 mile days but I like to stop a lot and I don't run the interstate unless I need to. It's all about checkin out a new place or a small town. If I need to do a 1000 miles I'm puttin the dog in the box and driving the truck. I was gonna do Sturgis from south ms. and planned to take four days to get there. Didn't happen but I planned it.

Keep in mind the weather. I rode from San Antonio, TX to Sturgis last year, roughly 1400 miles one way and it took me 2.5 days to get there. The temp was 103+ all the way up until I hit the middle of Nebraska. The ride back was a bit worse. That heat wore me out.

I would recommend some practice runs, pick a location about 900 miles away from you, ride there and then come back the next day. I think like just about anything else, you can condition yourself to what the ride entails and what that distance will do to you. Maybe even start off with a spot 500 miles away, ride there and then come back the next day.

Biggest thing is to be safe and make it to your destination alive and in one piece. :2thumbs:

IMHO it's not how many miles you can do but how much you can enjoy the ride. I recently did a 2000 mile road trip. I rode for 4 out of 6 days and had the time of my life. I don't see the point of killing yourself to accomplish 1800 miles in 2 days if you can take a few extra days to enjoy yourself. Just my 2 cents....

I must say that I am flattered to have Raywood & Knotso mention me. I did pull the Lynnwood, WA to Redwood City, CA run Monday non-stop except for fuel...didn't even eat but wasn't really hungry anyway (868 mi in 13 hrs). Did have rain for about 500 miles of it too and thankfully the rain gear was flawless...worth it to get here and ride in the sunshine since, after cleaning the bike up of course.

However my biggest day so far has been on my Ducati 996R in a 2007 Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1000 & Bun Burner 1500 run...verified by the officials.

1200 miles on Wednesday (9/12/07), left at 6:15am and arrived 3:30am Thursday morning:

Followed by 400 miles on Thursday (9/13/07), left at 9am and arrived at 3pm:

Black Ball - That said, I worked my way up to it and didn't just ride it on a whim. Need to have the proper equipment for weather and minor maintenance. Someone needs to know where you're going and the route plus you should check in when arriving, especially if you're riding alone. Have a backup plan for quitting early if you're tired, know ahead of time where you can stop to rest and note any possible long spots where you can run into fuel trouble then fill before you're there. Have your phone fully charged, make sure your fluid levels are solid, air in tires, etc. Also give yourself the most daylight possible and avoid really twisty roads at night as the headlights don't light up very well to the extreme sides when it is dark. Watch elevation as I've encountered snow in July once. Most of all ride safe and remember it is better to get there late than not at all.

Having good tunes and comfortable in-ear headphones are a god send for extended rides. Audio books work well too.

I have ridden to Sturgis 4 times, each trip covering about 1100 miles in two days. These trips were on my HD Heritage Springer (softail with a windshield). My suggestion would be that you will have a more enjoyable trip if you can stretch out your ride to Sturgis so it's an enjoyable trip there and home rather than beating yourself up to get there. Lack of a windshield will cause more fatigue than you might realize if you spend that much time in the saddle. I have ridden 1032 miles home from Rapid City in 17 1/2 hours. The first 700 miles was a breeze. The remaining miles started to feel like a lot of effort to stay focused and not let the fatigue bother me. Again that was on a softail with a windshield.

I would like to ride my Ridgeback to Sturgis next year but instead of two days getting there, I would plan for 3 days on the road. If I felt great and could make it in two, that would be a bonus.

Hell, if ya ride more hours than its daylight, Then what's the point? Ya can't see anything to enjoy AND riding high speed after dark IS more dangerous!

My 2 cents, Shovelcowboy
