How do you determine which Big Dogs can accept a sissybar and which can't?

I believe the ones with the turn signals all the way at the back of the fender have the struts that can accept a sissybar and the ones with the turn signals at the halfway point on the rear fender have the struts that cannot.
Is this a correct assumption and if not, how do I determine by looking which ones can and can't.

They made both types of struts. Derrick and Donna may have some sets still? Aint cheap tho.... If the struts have holes, sissy bar, if no holes, you need struts. The 04's had bars that went in from the back side (horizontal) instead of vertical holes.

there were several different types of sissy bar/strut combinations. have had no experience with the ones that mount from the rear, so i'm gonna leave that for somebody else. the ones that mount in a hole from the top, there were two different designs on them. the first one was the same thickness as the non-sissy bar ones and had an enlarged "goose egg" looking area around the hole (useable but not the prettiest girl at the dance). the second one was thicker and smoother the full length of the strut (the kind you want to take home to momma). both of these mount with a screw from below into the sissy bar. but to go a little farther, some of them use tapered ends on the sissy bars, with these, you have to have the matching ferrells. BUT you will always want to put the split in the ferrell to the inside next to the fender because they tended to spread and crack the strut, rendering them useless. the other type of strut/sissy bar combination has straight ends with the hole in the strut straight to match. sounds a little confusing, but i hope it helps.

The one that mounts into the rear of the struts, is a heaver strut, and slide in with a grove cut into the bar. The set screw screws into the bottom of he strut, so the bar does not come out. You have to drill another hole into fender because the strut has 3 bolts on each side for more strength. The light buckets need to be drilled out as the blot that holds them on goes from the inside of bucket to strut, and that bolt is hollow to run the wire through. In turn that means you have to remove them from their housing to put them in one by one. I made a template (off the strut) so I knew where to drill by hoses on the fender. The not as easy to do as the newer bikes.

HD said they couldn't put a sissybar on this aftermarket light kit but a mechanic was able to.
Looks pretty straight forward if you're willing to drill holes into the struts.
Couldn't this also be done for BDMs?
