hl2t lifters

Another "tidbit" to be aware of.......:2thumbs:
What I ALWAYS do,when starting to adjust valves is:
Get the cylinder on TDC compression that I'm going to do first.
NEVER,EVER,put the pushrods in the other cylinder,UNTIL the valves are set in the first cylinder, and engine turned over to tdc on the second cylinder....
Why ??
Because when turning the motor over,to get tdc on the second cylinder,if you have the pushrods and rockers on,you can squeeze some oil from the lifters, which may ruin your feel for the end of free play(you'll compress the lifter too easily by hand)which may result in a too tight,or bent valve.

Excellent idea, thanks and I will keep that in mind! :2thumbs:

One thing that I've not been able to tell is what the difference is in the two. I've looked on the S&S website and the web and no where can I find an image of what the regular lifters look like compared to the HL2T lifters.

Can some one post a pic of the difference?

I can not find anything that states they make them for the EVO motor, just for the Twin Cam design. Am I wrong?

Travel limiters are nothing more than inserts that you install inside your hydraulic lifters after taking them apart.
They look like a washer that's got a 1/2" hole in the center, about 1/8" thick, and is able to fit inside the lifter body. They're are made for Evo's,Sportsters, and Twin Cams.
You can make them yourself,or get them from S&S.:D

Interesting, I took one of my lifters apart then forgot if that washer went on top of the plunger or on the bottom. No description of it in the manual. Guess I have them then. I didn't do my adjustments according to this type lifter.

The confusion on this topic comes from the term zero lash.

When adjusting with HL2T kits zero lash is set with the plunger resting bottomed on the spacer and then you adjust 6 flats above the spacer. This allows the lifter to pump up. leaving an air gap between the spacer and plunger. If you set at zero lash or just bottomed on the spacer the lifters have a difficult time pumping up and will be very noisy.

If you are not using HL2T spacers then you adjust from the top of the plunger travel down.

HL2T kits are adjust from the bottom up.

Hope this helps

Ray,

Were those your orignal lifters, for it sounds like you had the HL2T lifters.

I have not had mine apart to check personnaly but the shop was asked to confirm and said they did when they did the head work.

If yours had them and they were the original, it does seem like some of the 2005 did indeed come with them.

Next time I go to adjust, will pull them out and see WTF.

Well, I'm still confused on what one looks like. Here is one of the old lifter I took apart and there was no washer in it. Just the spring, plunger and retainer.

Ray,

So I take it the one with the washer you mentioned were on a different newer set, non-original.

Thanks

No, my mistake. It wasn't a washer it was that shorter piece a the top of the photo. No washers, my mistake.
