He speaks the truth... This happened to me last year biketoberfest on Friday. I was riding north on A1A to meet friends at the Oasis in St. Augustine. I was in left hand lane as I saw the sign for the Oasis, cruising at about 40mph probably fourth gear. There was a car in the right lane a ways back, so I rolled on the throttle hard to get further ahead and change lanes to make the right hand turn, after about two seconds of acceleration the main shaft snapped, no warning or noises, no gear changes, didn't even touch the clutch, just a roll on from about 2000 rpm. Coasted into the overflow parking lot (which was kinda cool, better than losing it on I-95).

I had breakfast while I waited for the motorcycle towing guys...

Did you replace it yourself? Any shims, manuals, special tools, etc etc needed?

I'm like you, I do everything myself now, but this is beyond us. You need many special tools and experience to rebuild a tranny. I took it out and myself and put it back together myself, but sent it to Baker for the rebuild because I wanted the warranty (that's just me, not saying anyone else can't do it right, just my preference at that time).

That's exactly what I'm thinking too. How much did Baker set you back for their rebuild?

I would have to dig out my receipts, but I believe it set me back an even $1500 plus shipping to them. It wouldn't be nearly as bad for you though because I also bought a new clutch. The rebuild would be cheaper for you too because when my mainshaft failed debris from it took out 3 or 4 of my gear sets which also had to be replaced.

I believe bigdogtech01 does rebuilds too (is that correct??) I would definitely check with him and compare with Baker...

Andrew ( bigdogtech01 ) Did my transmission 2,500 miles ago and it works better than new. He does excellent work at a more than fair price. I would check with him to repair your trans, he has all the special tools needed. PM him and find out. Jaggerz

I kinda sorta was waiting for a reply from him after my last reply on his help. So far he has been great help and I have heard nothing but good things about his work. If even those picky Swedes are happy, anyone would be happy....

( I am Norwegian and have the right to say this....:roll::roll: )

Lol, all the Swedish guys I met were very nice :D
And thank you Tim, glad it's still running strong for you :2thumbs:
I sent a PM to you Viking
As far as a warranty goes, don't let that e the determining factor. I don't advertise as having one, but I can assure you, if there was a problem, I will back it up 100% I have been doing these rebuilds for over 6 years now and have not had any customers complain about a premature failure.

Oh and another thing, you are correct about the proper tools needed. Just this year I have replaced a few main shafts that were bent due to improper installation. The tools I use Pull the shafts into the bearings rather than trying to Push them in using a shop press. There is no stress on the shafts when you pull them into the bearings. Pressing them in can put a lot of stress on the shaft and if not done correctly, can bend the main shaft. I rebuilt one this week that was .012" out of round. The customer had it rebuilt last year by someone else, and ended up with a vibration that would not go away.
So the fix, new main shaft and new bearings.

Bike is back together and runs better than ever. The clutch is now smoother than it ever was while I have had it and putting it in neutral is easier than on a Goldwing. Very happy and on my way to catch a

I will replace that main shaft since I now have that idea every time I play dragster driver, and Andrew will be the one doing that task when I get ready to getrdone.....
