high pitch chattering sound from the primary

I have a 2004 Big Dog Chopper. Its making a high pitch chattering sound from the primary. Clutch pulls great just making alot of noise. Even in neutral. I pulled the Inspection plate off and the fluid smelled burnt.

Sounds like you somked the clutch plates with the burnt smell. But, I ain't no mechanic.

Have you checked fluid level, chain tension, pressure foot etc? Does it feel worn/slipping? You'll likely get better help by providing better/more info, if you can.

That burnt smell makes me suspiscous of the clutch. Has the fluid level ever gotton low on you?

:flag: I ran into a similar problem when the stealer I was using, who is out of business now, failed to perform all of the work which I had paid for. The squealing sound may be the clutch rod--which I mentioned not being lubed at a factory scheduled maintenance check-up. Don`t worry though it`s not hard to fix. Check your manual for a how-to.
As for the burnt smell of the primary lube; agree I with NascarNutCase for I had run into the same scenario when my primary oil was too low. It smelled like hell, but I cleaned it out with transmission fluid--GM tech type which I contnue to use in my primary and now I have no more clutch slipping problems. Plus it`s a hell of a lot cheaper than primary oil . Just sayin`. You use what your gut tells you to. :flag: :2thumbs:

the tension is good, the fluid was at a good level. It started soon after a good run with a rice rocket off the line. i changed the fluids and it was burnt but now its only getting worse

sounds like fried clutch. does it slip????????

the same thing happened on my 06 chopper coming back from sturgis and the main trannsmission bearing behind the clutch went out but all the noise was in the prymary. also had prymary oil cross over into the tranny

2004 then I'll bet your compensator nut came loose. Check your rotor and stator while in there.

My 2005 just broke the aluminum clutch basket hub and it made a lot of noise. The clutch still worked ok but when it was disengaged at a stop the bike was jumping a little bit to the point you had to hold the brake to keep it stopped. I called baker and they said it was a common problem and sold me a new up-graded hub. Then they recommended a 9 disc clutch. I installed all of this per BD manual and the new clutch slips. They did not specify what primary oil to use so I called them and ask if HD 20W 50 synthetic would work and they said yes. I think that the oil is my problem and I get to do it again.

Anyway it sounds like you will need to have a look in your primary.

Just received 9 disc clutch plate kit from Energy One and easy pull ramps from Baker yesterday. Energy One (the maker of the Baker plates) states on all their literature "THE USE OF SYNTHETICS IS NOT RECOMMENDED AS THEY TEND TO CAUSE SLIPPAGE".

I am no mechanic but not sure a stock BDM was intended to drag race rice rockets :loony:

I dont know if this will help but mine was making a grinding noise which I thought was coming from the primary,I recently had a bandit clutch and bearing.After which it started making the noise took the bike back and they checked the clutch install and ruled that out.What they did find is the four bearings inside the trans one was starting to fail,so this is most likely the sound you are hearing!so now they are fixin that,oh well if U can't pay don't play
