HID KIT problem, need advice

I have a 2009 Mastiff, and have just had a problem with Jake's HID kit.

This was sent to Jake in emails/PM and contact on his website. I know he will respond, but as I don't want to catch the bike on fire or something, I am posting this for more immediate response by the general membership. I was going on a 250 mile ride tomorrow, but if this is about to get worse, I need to know (cancel my trip).

Jake I got the HID kit from you about 3 months or so ago. This morning, the headlights went to high-beam only and my reflector appears to have a haze in it that was not there a day or so ago (smoke?). If I push low-beam, it seems to try to start the HID (sort of flickers), but it does not stay on and immediately goes to high beam again.

What has happened and what do I need to do?

Please let me know ASAP

I decided I better look in the headlight bucket since it looked smokey and smelled electrical. Attached are 3 pictures of the HID bulb. It looks to me like the end of it blew off. The Adjure lens is full of a white looking residue and contains a bunch of chunks of white stuff. (Lens may be ruined as well, see picture). The inside of the lens has a very strong burned electronics smell.

Does anyone have Jakes number? I sent him the fullsize pictures and this email, but nothing I have from Low-Down Chop Shop has a telephone number.

(This is critical to me for riding in the evening. I am nearly blind at night without the HID light.)

I think the white chunks and powder in the lens are the "glue" that held the 2 bulbs together as well as being the glue that holds the bottom of the light steady. And the wire that goes in the end of the HID bulb is no longer connected.

what a mess

I'd say your HID is toast! I wouldn't leave it in because everytime that bulb tries to light there's a shit load of voltage send to it.

Pull it out and replace it with the stock bulb, then you can make your ride!

I know, "Thanks Mr. Obvious!" :D

Seems as though their have been a lot of problems with these HID kits, I'm glad I never installed one. Good luck Richard and if you need any help just give me a shout.

I wish I had more money.
Sounds like these are kind of like our ehc's! Huh. Yeah Morris. I would just take it our and put the stocker back in.At least the bike won't burn to the ground!

At this point the stock headlight and bulb are back in the bike.

The Adjure lens is ruined, so I will be out the cost of that as well. (And like the other guy said, I am going to get a better quality lens this next time).

:iagree:

I think the switch to HID is a good idea but I don't agree with this particular implementation of it.

Plus I want the high beam function... :D

Just my 2cents ...but I love my HID ...I have had to replace the bulb once because of moisture getting in ..but the extra light output is worth it !

That is exactly what I was thinking....the hid element is probably more sensitive to moisture and vibration.

Actually, I think the white ceramic looking glue that hold the regular bult to the HID bulb first disintegrated (heat) and than the HID blub was basically free to vibrate and the rest of the white glue at the base of the HID buld broke up. my 2nd post had pictures so you can see this (white glue is gone)

The good news is Jake is warrantying it and will send me a new one Monday.

Thanks Jake and thanks everyone for responding...

For starters these HID kits are not like the EHC's. I have sold over 200 kits to Big Dog owners and I have a box here from the day I started selling them, with 3 bad bulbs (this the 4th) and 3 bad ballasts Total. I'd say I have sold somewhere between 200-250 kits to BDM and HD guys.

Now, second, the Adjusre lens is not ruined. That dust will wipe out with a damp cloth, I have done it (one of those 4 bad bulbs was one of mine that was over 2 years old and it did that).

It looks like in this case, by the looks of the tip of the bulb where the electrode enters the bulb, that it may have come into contact with the tri bar. Or it was resting on the tri-bar and the vibration finally took its toll on it.

You may want to check the Adjure lens for clearance depth wise because the tri-bar takes up about 1/4" extra space and the stock lens with the HID in has less clearance between the tip of the bulb and the glass lens.

The ballast will be fine because it has a protection curcuit built in that won't ignite a broken bulb or shorted output.

Next I sent you a PM requesting your address to send you a new bulb under warranty.

Sorry it took me a few hours to respond, but it is the weekend and I was out enjoying some free time.:2thumbs:
