hey purple dog or anyone

Energy One
05 ridgeback.

read the thread on how to adjust clutch, etc. even book marked it, and finally decided to adjust mine. been having some "creeping" issues.

anyway, i did exactly what the thread said to do.... and the damn thing got worse!!!!!
now when i start it and put into gear it jumps forward and kills the engine.

what did i do wrong? too tight on the bolt??

p.s. i counted the threads on the outside of the jam nut and even tried to put it back to where it was so i could ride down to the bike show... still NO LUCK!

thanks in advance for any help. and NO, i aint callin strokers or anyone else this time...LOL

Steve...by chance has your clutch hub nut ever been checked for not being tight? Before doing anything like pulling the primary cover to check that-I would attempt to adjust the clutch again from the start. As noted before-some of these seem to be a little more difficult to get that clutch adjusted properly than others. Also, I THINK if the primary chain is too loose they will lurch forward. (Someone that knows more than me please chime in here). You can check the slack in the chain through the inspection cover. Good luck!

ok... i went back and am reading the rest of that thread.

seems as if 1 of 2 things need to happen.

1)adjust the rod OUT SOME MORE or
2) get a new "updated" push rod.

love this site!!!!!!!!!

i did have a loose primary chain a while back...was making a horrible racket, till i tightened it. it's still good.

i have been reading the old thread. i'm gonna back off that pushrod some more when i get home to see if that fixes it. if not, guess i'm buying a new pushrod.

i'm trying to get this bike back in tip top shape so when i sell it... the new owner (whoever it might be) will have a NICE BIKE!!

I would back the rod all the way out and see if worn..if so replace..if not put back in and seat it then back out 1/4-1/2 turn...then tighten making sure you don't turn rod... sometimes you will feel like it seated and it didn't so very gently see if it will go more....if that don't work it's clutch hub nut time... more then likely that's it....

Thank ya. will see what happens tonight. :2thumbs:

i set it like the thread. about a dime.

only thing i didn't do... was level the bike. would that cause the problem making the adjustments??
i'm gonna have my wife hold the bike upright tonight while i re adjust it all.

Ok guys.... had the wife hold the bike up....went through the whole deal again....same thing..put in gear and it jumps forward and dies. So...I. pulled the clutch lever in, and bike won't roll. Guess I jacked something up. :( what next???

THE COMMOMAN
Ok heres what i did. Mine had the same problem so this was my fix. Removed the primary cover and found the clutch hub nut loose. Adjusted the cable all the way out and Loosened the pushrod out for max play. Removed the clutch hub nut. Cleaned all items with brakeclean and dried with a airgun. Used RED Locktite and reinstalled with a airgun and let stand overnight.checked the chain for proper tenision and used a 6in rule for the right measurement. Refill and close cover. Now heres where i did things a little different. I backed off the nut on the push rod and used MY FINGERS to turn the rod in till it made contact with the throwout bearing and backed it out just till i could feel it free from the throwout bearing and tighted it down. after i made this adjustment my clutch has not had a problem and i find nuteral anytime i want. Its one of the best :whoop: things iv'e done for my ride and im real happy with the outcome on this one. Hope this helps on your scoot if you try doing it this way let me know how it comes out. JJ

Agree with whats been said, pull the primary cover and make sure your carrier isn't cracked and the hub nut is tight (left). Adjustment is pretty straight forward from there, it sounds like you've read about it; I'm too buzzed somewhere in FL to type it up, 1/4 out from contact basically, but the stock clutch is a pos design, might be a worn / weak diaphragm spring.

had a problem while locking down the jam nut and the ball ramp lever would creep forward and could not adjust correctly. loosen the cable and put a wrench on the jam nut and see if you can move the arm back. hope this helps

cavcom278. i read where you adjusted your pushrod down by hand. i tried the same thing. set the lever play with a dime, etc. still having the same problem. pull lever in and bike is stuck in gear, etc.
i will take the primary off tonight when i get home and inspect the clutch basket and remove the pipes and pull the rod all the way out.
i may even order a bandit clutch assy' as others have suggested.

thanks for all the help guys. BDB rulez!!

Thanks Purple Dog. i will most likely order the bandit clutch assy'.
might as well fix it all at once and be done with it.
Agreed, good value at 300. bucks imo; midas well spend another 100 on their carrier if you are still running the old design stock carrier that will break on you at some point....clutch issues are an annoyance that didn't need to happen. Fix it right and forget it if you have the coin....:flag:

99.9% chance that the carrier is broke. If your 05 didn't get the recall done on it, most all of them broke. There are a lot of guys riding 05's out there with cracked, or completely broken carriers that just don't know it yet.

I have changed quite a few of them.
