I will take a shot at this at what I think you are asking.

The USB connector you also see in there is to the EHC, electrical harness connector. It also has some software in it too "SmartLink III" and it is propriety by BDM also. This is for all of your hand controls, brakes, lights and stuff. You should have lights on it that you can troubleshoot with. This is for the dealers. I do not know off any software that is for sale to the public but I am not sure.

Did BDM change something in 08?
Seeing how your bike is a EFI, if you are wanting to see the alarms on your bike for the Engine Light, you need to hook up to the VFI module which has a serial connection on the module itself. Perhaps it has changed, I don"t know.
Here is a link to the VFI module and the interface on it which is what I am talking about.
When you connect here, you need to use the Pro Tune II software by S&S to read the alarm. The actual map and software here is also proprietary but just a bastardized version of the Pro Tune II software. It calls for a certain box file to be loaded.

If you are going to try to adjust the timing I beleive this is preset in the Thunderhart ignition and nonprogramable. The other cable is for the dealer to read how the bike has been ridden, Rev hits, RPM times etc.

Somebody please correct my tired cracker ass if I am wrong:loony:

Here's a pic of the cable on my 2007 K-9. I'm pretty sure it's the same on yours. The white plug (number 1) is attached to the bike. I laid a black cable along side it for comparison- that's what you need to connect it to your computer. (That is, the black plug goes into the white plug.) The white plug comes with a cap to keep it clean, shown as number 3, lying on the battery.

The other end of your cable that plugs into your computer is one of the following three, all of which are valid USB ends. You almost certainly need the white one on the right.

Big Dog dealers have access to proprietary software (meaning, you can't get it) called SmartLink III, that does a variety of diagnostic tasks. Among other things, you can have them print out a data summary like the following. Some dealers charge for it, but most will give it to you for free. This is for a carburated bike. Obviously things would be different for a fuel injected bike.

Last year it seemed like we couldn't get the diag software and connections, but I'll look into it now again.

Good luck... I don't believe you'll find the software for sale it was a priority BDM only.

Now if was for 07 and newer VFI/EFI I could hook u up.
