Help with calc's

Greeting's one and all.
My 08 K-9 is alive and kicking and i have a set of triple trees arriving with 0 deg rake. This is to help me ride my bike and not attract the Fed's and shorten the amount of load that is placed on the triple trees by our terrible roads over here in OZ.

So as the K-9 has 39 deg in the head and 3 deg in the trees with 12 inch overs.

WHAT will 39 deg and zero deg trees get me in tube length??????????????

This is what i must order in, i can't go to the corner bike shop and get some off the shelf (300) miles away is the closest after market shop.

The Dakota speedo arrived Friday and works a treat. So does my new Hummingbird side scan sounder, that i got from the US, love the idea of our $ up against the USD.

You should be fine with 10 over, slightly high in front but barely noticable. Make sure the new trees have the same offset.

You could try the 10 over as Moe suggested.
It would be expensive to order the tubes and have them the wrong ones though.
I thought the rake was 38 degreese ??? anyway.
I'd contact Sam at RollingThunder in Canada- he has a website.
He builds custom frames ans bikes.- He even made the frames for BDM early models.
Sam also set up BDMs frame shop. Hes always willing to help. He was a big help with my bike.
Just let him know what your doing- he might even have some parts you will need.

Thanks for your help guy's. Yes the laws in OZ are a crock of shit, anything to make your life difficult.

10" overs sounds @ right will that still put me in the sweet spot for my trail and rake?

And as for a inch higher at the front that may stop me from grinding my foot pegs down
Tim your right 38 Deg for the neck and 3 for the trees.

Moe what do you mean "offset"????????
The set i got are off a Duce 0 rake and 41mm tubes

Go with a American Suspension Springer. They send them to you about a foot to long un assembled and you cut them yourself.

Had a springer front end once................made a good drift anchor, they may be good on US roads but not on the goat track they call our national highway, you would have carry a full set of bushes with you at all times.

Hi jeff , I think that moespeeds is meaning the distance that the fork tubes are offset from the steering tube , i hope i explaned it right . some triple trees have the holes for your fork tubes further back or forward

Offset is the distance from the neck to the fork tubes. I believe BD uses 2.5". Dropping the raked trees is a minor change I'm sure it will be fine, but you can do the calculations if you want.

Thanks Moe, i did the calc's using the formula but i kept getting different numbers, it was starting to do my head in. That is why i put it on here so someone with more knowledge than me and who has done this sort of thing before may be able to shed a bit of lite and a few words of wisdom.
SO do you think that by going to a set of 0 deg trees and a set of 10" overs (as suggested) would still be within the trail and rack and offset?
Also how will i know if these new trees have the correct offset? (i don't have them yet)

Buy 11 over tubes and try them. If it doesn't sit or ride right just cut them down to 10. Its not like the thing is gonna explode if its not perfect. If your trail ends up too high you'll have excessive bar flop and if its too low you'll barely get out a the driveway before you feel like your driving a bar stool.

I would question the (interpetation) of the law where you are located. Being a former custom car manufacturer, I am well aware of what it takes to get a production vehicle on the road legally. Since BDM (was) a manufacturer that sold to the public, all of their bikes had to conform to the FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) and DOT regulations before they could legally be sold to the public for on highway use. Hence the reflectors, down tube stickers, emissions and noise requirements, etc.

All of their bikes are 50 state legal when they left the factory. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I do need it to handle right.
It already feels like i am riding a brick, and doing 3 point turns to ride around a round about, is not much fun.

just put it back too stock and keep that shit a to z gave you incase you pulled up and toy can put it back on to be inspected and then change back again . We dont have too much hassel up in queensland but dont do the club runs or you will get pulled up

Ahh there you go, i do do club runs, a fair bit of touring, and a lot of bar hopping.
Yes it does stick out like dogs balls.

Trees arrived Friday and they look they goods. Just putting them up against the existing set the angle is vastly different. So hopefully the 24th should have them in and done, and i will belt down the Sunny Coast for a run the following W/E.

By reducing the rake, the bike WILL get higher/taller in the front..A VERY SMALL amount.
By removing raked trees, the trail WILL improve, :2thumbs: and the bike may handle better. :eek:
