First thing is to check to make sure your exhaust flange nuts are tight. What pipes do you have installed?

Sounds like it's running lean; if the above doesn't do the trick, tune the carb. See the threads on this forum for help, of visit the S&S website.

As S&S says a properly tuned carb will give you decel pop. You can fatten it up and detune it to make it stop, but thats your choice. Do a search for decel pop and you'll find plenty to read.....

X2, Had the same problem.
Lean is mean but over the long haul takes it's toll on the motor.
Go with a bit richer mix the pop goes away. you may notice a bit less torque ,
but you'll get an overall longer life on the motor.

I fill your pain. My 02 Pit has started doing it. Drives me nuts. I changed out the plugs Saturday and put about 50 miles on it and had no backfires and pops. Going to see if it starts back. If it does going to see how many miles I got on the new plugs. I'll pull the plugs and take a look at them to see if it's lean. If so, going to see what size jets the shop put in it while I was in ABQ, New Mexico working for a year. I think I need to re-jet since I'm back home on SC cause I never had the issue to I brought the bike back home. I'm running Vance & Hines 2 into 2 on mine.

Going from New Mexico to S.C. there is a difference in altitude.
It's a pain with a carb vs. efi. Being here in Vegas I do notice that a lot while traveling up and down the mountain areas, on my carb driven '07 chopper.

Looking forward to retirement
my mudusas pop bad when I back off. At night you can see a 12''-18'' flame coming out the pipe.

Lean = decel pop! As said above check your exhaust flange nuts, Bottom flange bolts 20 in lbs then top 20 in lb, then bottom 60-80 in lbs, then top bolt 60-80 in lbs. If this doesn't stop the pop then richen up your mixture screw a little, if you can't tune it out with the mixture screw then may have to go up a jet size.

+1

A quarter turn did the trick for me as well. I would give that a try first, but you may have to take more drastic measures of re-jetting if you went from NM to SC. Good luck.

True but most 117's I've seen have decel pop. Just the nature of a high performance beast! I've tried jetting mine to death but it still pops. Even tried different exhaust, torque cones, baffles, etc. still pops. I decided to accept it & enjoy the ride!

had decel pop that kept getting worst, tried every thing, isolator block or spacer and carb also has o ring gaskets, replaced both fragile o rings on isolator block and carb and guess what ,no decel pop none and bike runs so much better cant believe it was that simple.

I richened mine up just a bit 1/4 turn, BUT the thing that reduced my popping was drilling 2 x 7/16 holes in the baffle of my V&H 2-1 Big radius, only backfires now if i give it a full twist of the wrist, then shut her down quickly.

S&S website has a good instruction on tuning a carb correctly. S&S Cycle | Carb Quick Guide Also, pay attention to number 11. I spoke with S&S in the spring and the tech told me even a too short or no overflow tube can cause carb problems. Altitude and temp play a major part in jetting. With a little trial and error you can get a bike to run pretty good without a dyno.
