im new here but ive been reading forums for a while now..ive got a 07 k9 that has been plagued with electrical problems forever.......anyway i just (3 months ago) installed a big dog retro fit wiring harness. last week i was riding and the bike just quit..found the negative post on the battery was melted,so i bought a new battery and installed..now everything works but the starter will not operate...i have removed tank,upper controls,side covers ect... and cant find any loose or chaffed wires.....any ideas:bang:

I'm thinking you may have a wire rubbing somewhere and shorting things out or you missed a wire on the battery when you hooked it up. However sounds more like a short if the battery melted. Here's some other things to try.

thanks guys..i will keep looking. wish i knew, did the battery melt because of a short or did the battery have a loose ground wire and that fried somthing else. on the bdm retro fit none of the fuses are blown and the relays are good, headlights work as well as blinkers, tail lights ,and display on speedo..

A loose connection on the battery terminal could have been part of the problem. It would have caused an arching and damaged the battery. To me it sounds like you have more than one problem going on at once which is always a pain to track down. I would check all the grounds and look through all my wiring again. Is there a relay or fuse inline with that starter? I am not to familier with how these bikes are wired internally since I have not had to dig into mine all that much. (cross's fingers) I have only had the luck of bulbs going out or the switch board wires breaking off.

Check the charging system and regulator. There was a regulator recall early 07. Search the forum on it for info.

Might want to start with the basics. Starter won't do anything. After you turn the key on, hit the run switch, do you get 12vdc at the starter wire (green I think????) that makes the solenoid pull in? If not start working your way back. An electrical schematic would be helpful.

It melted because of too much resistance on one of your connections which resulted in too much current draw for too long. You need to find this with a multimeter.
