HELP: COMPRESSION BUTTONS ON 117CI

Well, here's my situation.

The bike is soooo hard to start. The only way it will start now is i have to have a buddy press and HOLD (both compression buttons) while i hit the electric start button and voila , it starts np.

Which means the brand new starter i bought will wait to be used once the one on the bike wears out. (nice having a backup on hand)

i'm so new to bikes, that i'm not sure what type of s&s 117ci i have, meaning is it an xwedge? vseries, evoluction big twinn?

He's the guru, we notice the rockers are very loud too and want to check the settings. This means the rocket tops come off. So i want to have everything ordered for this job. Then we need to know the specs for this engine and all that is required to get me up and running.

so far all i can think of is what i have listed below:

seals for rocker boxes ( 2)
comprression button (2)
the compression rubber bubbles (2) / (currently one is torn) grrrr.

Note, just installed brand new belt and rear pully , went well and learned lots did it with my buddy. I really thank him for his knowlege. He not familar with big dogs per say. But has built many bikes himself. So i'm so fortunate to have him steer me.

Bought an extra starter., (hugh THANKS DONNA )
Bought an extra front long life pully, (will not install it as the front is NOT WORN AT ALL)

I am guessing i'll need compression buttons and will reach back out to donna for an order but i want to get a list together for one order to Canada.
Getting hit with brokerage fee's is insane .

Oh and .......

I want to know if an easy start cam is something i should buy thus perhaps elminating compression buttons? anyone?

and ......

what about the spike add on for a starter? read a little on it.

You have an S&S SuperSideWinder+ 117
Do you have a Service Manual?
If not give me your email and I will get one over to you.
How many miles on the bike?
Are you first owner, 2nd owner?
Do you have Rocker Covers with four bolts or 6 bolts?
You don't need to pull the rocker covers to adjust the pushrods.
If you have the 4 bolt rocker covers then you have a TP TopEnd and you may not be able to alleviate the noise as BD had a lot of alignment issues with the TP setup and many have had to replace the rocker boxes with an S&S setup to resolve the issue.
Before you buy new compression releases you need to troubleshoot the electrical system and find out why they are not activating when you hit the start button.

Thanks so much for your QUICK reply.
Bike is currently being stored at my buddies place. So can't check on 4-6 bolts for rocker.
I did check a few pics i had, I belive its 4( hard to tell in the pics)

I belive i am the 3rd owner. The bike came from united states then to Dealership to canada ,now to me.

Milage: really hard to tell, for when i turn on key it blinked a number 49,100 miles, But the odd thing is (this number has never changed). We click on the tach button and well it could be just under 14,000 miles.

Manual: i do not have a manual. MY email is neal.mccallum@gmail.com
Thanks so much.

electricial: while the bike was under warranty. They had to put on the pmd model
for the electrial system. However i'm noticing odd things. like. when driving the tach will NOT show rpm's lit. Then the next time there present. So there must be either a loose connection or a short some place. (your so right, GOOD JOB!!)

I haven't the first clue how to trouble shoot electrial, thus i'll just have to pop the seat off and make sure all connection related to pmd are tight. ( I suppose i could put dielectric grease in all the connections right?)

yaknow : it's funny the dearship keep saying it's a custom blah, blah, , expect it to be broken. . I disagree. It's NOT a custom. It was a factory build hi end bike. I honestly don't belive my downtime should be more than my uptime.

I belive the previous 2 owner wore parts out and need replaced. I don't belive the bike is unrealiable. I bought the bike to catch some major wind (daily) not let it collect dust.

I"m sure there are lots of bigdog oweers who put more than 400 clicks a day on a weekend on there scoot more than me.

Thanks for all your help.

Neal. (God bless)

Its highly likely you have the TP valve setup so you may want to get in there and check the guides e.t.c. Some have not had problems with the TP system but they seem to be few and far between.
So you have the PDM system on your bike all ready.
You would be doing yourself a favor to go through and clean and dielectric grease ALL the connectors on the bike. It will solve allot of small issues for you.
I would highly recommend you get your hands on some literature and learn basic electrical troubleshooting as you will need it to get to the end of your journey, that being having the bike running trouble free.
Your dealer is full of it. These bikes can and are dependable if they are maintained properly. My brother Raywood has almost 100,000 miles on his 05 Chop and its still plugging along

After my PDM install my RPM would work some times and sometimes it would not. Found a ground wire that was loose, repaired it and now it works all the time. But ever since the PDM install my RPM will not read above 3500 RPM's. Still not sure why.

Also, with the PDM, make sure your compression release fuse is not blown. (Bottom right one). Of course, if any fuse is blown replace...

Hi, I have had this problem on my 2006 K9 as well and after years of messing around with various solutions I had the bike re-wired and switched to manual de-compressors, it works a lot better after duming the EHC etc.

Just my two cents: if you have a Thunder Heart programable ignition module there is a value that you can change for the TACH setting that may fix your issue. Of course you'll need the software / computer cable adapter. Might be more hassle than its worth though.

Thanks for the input.....I still have the stock ignition module. Don't want to hi-jack this thread so I'll start a new one

I think the SSW+ (super sidewinder plus) is closest to a V series. It has twin cam heads on a big twin case. The ones made for Big Dog have slightly lower compression.
I want to know if an easy start cam is something i should buy …..
I don’t think you can get the easy start cam for our big twin bottom end. I wish we could, but then again it might sound different at idle.

Go to the "electrical" section of the forum, and do a search on "Compression Release's ".........you will find ALL the info you ever wanted to know:whoop:,including electrical schematic's,diagnostic info, diagrams and more...........:)

I wanted to add the milage, it appears i have just a wee bit over 13,000 miles.

question: i'm all fixed up , thanks to this site and such GREAT PEOPLE.

aND I'M learning to work on my with a buddy, feels good too.

So is there anything i can do for the odd behaviour of my tach lights randomly not showing? it's stock.

I have bought the dakoda one ( just never installed it yet)
for i want to figure out why the tach lights will show sometimes . then i have to turn key off then back on again, then then magiccally reapear.

note: i use only one key in ignition . I don't hang a bunch of keys like some.

I like many here, ran a power lead to the starter. This worked great until my clutch basket broke completely. Ordered a new clutch assembly so I will repoert back once that is fixed. Having alot of issues this summer, hit 11k miles....
