Help!!! Clutch problem

I posted this earlier today in the wrong forum category, sorry for the double post. Let me try again. 2003 Bulldog, 107 ci, 6900 miles. I took the bike out of the garage for the second time this season, had it out last weekend. Warmed it up for a couple minutes, put it in first gear, with clutch in of coarse, and it lurched forward and died. At first the shift peg was locked and would not move with the clutch pulled in. I messed around with the clutch adjustment and was finally able to get in into neutral. I pushed it into the garage because something is still not right. Clutch cable looks fine. Any suggestions as to what might have caused this would be appreciated. Thanks

627 miles a year. That would let the plates kind of lock up from sitting in between runs. The lurching is a bunch of stuck plates. As if you put it in gear without pulling the clutch in.

Possible options:

1. For sure you pull out, check for warp, shuffle the plates back in.
2. Run or have someone push you off as you take off and throw it in gear. You have clutch lever in all the time. You now ride in that gear or shift up, hold the clutch in, hold the brakes down, load the throttle to try and break loose the clutch pack.

Excuse my ignorance but I have a question...

This would only happen on a Dry Clutch, right? or can it happen to wet clutches also?

How long has it been since you changed the primary fluid? You might want to do so because the fluid might be old and causing the clutch plates to stick together and not fully release. Also, make sure you are running a Primary oil, and is actually made to work with a wet clutch.
At this point, I would do a full clutch adjustment on it. The Rivera Primo Clutch in that can be finicky. You start with a 1/2 turn out on the pushrod, with 1/8" play at the lever..if it does not feel right, you might have to go more towards 1/4" on the pushrod.

Thanks you all for the replies. Just to answer some questions, I bought the bike in 2008 from a guy who bought it new. It had 1100 miles on it when I bought it from him, so I guess I put an average of 1000 miles per year on it, which still is not that much. I change all my fluids every year. I know that might be excessive but, thats me ! I believe I used Red LIne in the primary last year. Amsiol in the trans, and Mobile 1 in the motor. I have taken advantage of the wealth of information on this site, thanks to you guys and gals, and have done a lot of preventative maintenance and even repairs, and so far have never had to take my bike to the shop! I have to admit that I have never adjusted the clutch though. I never felt the need to. If it aint broke, I dont fix it. I'm going to pull the primary cover off today and take a look. I'll let you guys know what I find. Thanks again

Ok, pulled the primary cover and everything looked ok ( no busted pieces anywhere ). In fact it was very clean inside. I adjusted the clutch and now it will shift into first and neutral very nicely.
Now I have a few more questions.
1) Should I be able to shift into 2nd,3rd gear without the bike running. Right now I can't.
2) Can I use regular automatic trans fluid for now, just to see if the problem is solved ?
3) Should I replace the primary cover gasket, or can I reuse the one thats there ?
Thanks

1- Raise the rear wheel off the ground. Turn the rear wheel by hand, and you should be able to shift the trans. into 1st or 2nd. When in gear rock the rear wheel forward and backward, and you should be able to upshift or downshift to the next gear.
2- Nothing wrong with using ATF in the primary. I have quite a few bikes at 150 hp. + and that's what I use(heavy baggers also). The bike clutches are basically the same material as the clutch packs in car auto trans.
Alto Carbonite clutch pacs, I use synthetic atf.
Our #1 plate Pro-Mod race bikes, I use reqular motor oil.
Use a good gear oil in the trans. We use Bel Ray Shockproof.
3- I would change the primary gasket.

As John mentioned... Static shifting can be done by a dead engine and no clutch being pulled in. Simply sit on the bike and move the bike back and forth as you lift the lever by hand to shift up and down.

the thing to remember about our transmissions is that 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears have straight cut gears. 4th, 5th, and 6th are diagonal gears.

Ok update time ! As I mentioned above, I adjusted the clutch ( bigdogtech01 reply) as per the " How To " I found on this forum. Today after work, I checked to see if I could "static shift " the bike through the gears. ( Sven's reply ) That went well, so I put ATF in the primary ( John Sachs reply } and and took it for a rip around the block.
Not only did this fix the problem, but my bike never shifted so smoothly !

I really want to thank ALL you guys that take the time to reply to even the simple problems that fellow members are having and the guys that have obviously put a lot of time and effort into the " How To's "

Sometimes I feel a little embarrassed asking some of the simple questions that I ask, but not once have a gotten a shitty reply like " WTF everybody knows that ! "

Over the years I've had starter problems, charging problems, brake problems, you name it. but I have never taken my bike to the shop thanks to the best f*****g forum in the world and its Class A members !

Keep up the good work guys, and have a great week !

:2thumbs: That's why I'm on here everyday that I can. Even with as many years that I've been busting knuckles, I learn something new all the time. And there is no such thing as a dumb question, brain gas happens to all of us.
