I realized my bike s outer primary has a striped bolt in the lower right hand corner causing it to leak.

I am planing on using a helicoil and it would be the first time using one,

Is there any reason why I shouldnt and will I be able to drill into the primary alright?

It doesnt seem to difficult but thought Id put this out there , hoping to get some advise from someone who has done this before?

Thanks

I have used heli-coil many times. It's pretty simple. Just make sure that you are drilling the hole staright and centered. Once the hole is drilled then you have to tap and insert the coil and your done. I usually put some red locktight on the coil before I screw it in so it doesn't come out.

No problem just be carefull drilling and tapping, keep backing the tap out and cleaning so not to crack the primary. Not sure where you're working but not a lot meat (metal) in most holes.

ITS STRIP IN THE MOTOR NOT IN THE PRIMARY ITSELF, IT WOULD SUCK SCREWING THAT UP . I WILL HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHEN DRILL AND TAPPING FOR SURE,THANKS

I'm not sure what could be stripped on your outter primary as your inner has the threads. Honestly, I'd pickup a new inner primary on ebay or from someone here. Lots of guys have swapped to an open primary and sell their old stuff cheap. The primary is cast and I would never try to drill/tap/helicoil a cast part. Especially one that thin. I watched my dad chase a primary leak on one of his Harley's for years. Finally swapped it for a mint used one and never had an issue.

Yes the threads on the inner are striped and thaat one bolt that wont tighten is causing the leak.

Why can I drill and use a helicoil there?

The most damage will have you looking for a replacement inner primary. Measure the depth of the hole and mark your drill bit at this depth then, take your time and drill and install the helicoil. If you have a drill press and take the inner primary off the bike, it should go easier.

I was looking at the primary and the one that is stripped , I really doubt there is going to be enough area to put a heliciol in there .

I might just try a new gasket and some silicone, Im lost I hate the leak.

problem solved. I was about to tap the hole out to 5/16 and I didnt even realize that the port was open on both ends , when I realized it I went down to the harware store and bought a longer bolt with a lock nut .
I wish I knew that in the begining and I should have known but you cant see the other side ,dah ! lol
