Headlight mount bolt

My headlight mount bolt broke yesterday about ten miles from home:bang: Used my cold weather mask to hold my bucket to the tree to get home. Got home and found that the bucket scratched my trees and my bucket, used a high speed buffer to get the scratches out of the trees but the chrome bucket has a few scratches directly on top of the bucket very noticable:angry:
Tried to buff the chrome, but as most of us know, can't buff scratches out of chrome.
Don't know what grade bolt was originally in the mount but I replaced with a grade 8, hopefully this will hold. I read about this bolt failure on the forum a while ago and didn't act, here is the result

Maybe someone should create a list of the most common failures and soluitions (headlight bolt, clutch hub nut, greasing clutch cable and actuator), granted the list maybe long:lol: But this "to do list or section" could save some new BDM owners some grief:up:

Any american caphead screw should be grade 8 by default. Chrome hardware is generally grade 8 though I have seen some hex head chrome grade 5. If it's an important bolt, know the source. I get mine from

Looking at the headlight mounting block, seems to have a small footprint compaired to the extent of the headlight overhang towards the front putting stress on the bolt. Maybe I could make a new mount block that has a larger surface area extending towards the front. Maybe machine a point that extends out from the block to the end of the tree. Takes a bit of visualization I know, and no I'm not creating a CAD drawing. I'll post a pic if I make one.

Mine just broke... the bolt sheared off at the mounting,.. oh darn it, guess I will have to leave work early today so I have enough sunlight to get home.

My bolt and mount broke. The part that broke off the mount went under my brand new tire and put a big gash in it. I was close to losing my headlight and maybe more. Everyone out there should check this before every ride. This was the first time I was actually scared of my bike after 15k mlies.

Wait was this last weekend? I thought you just replaced the mount?

I fixed one this summer. The bolt didn't break, but the head light was loose. I took it apart and found the bucket had cracked all the way around were it connects to mount.
