Headlight Install Issue

Picked up a chrome Adjure bucket and Iron Cross lamp with a brand new PIAA bulb, damn plastic seal on the bucket is a pain in the @ss to push through; should have lubed her up a little.

I turn the key and low beam works great; switch to high and I got nothing. Don't have time tonight to rip it all back apart and try the stock bulb again.

First question: the new bucket came as self-grounded, so I did not bother hooking the black wire in headlight wire harness to anything; figured it was just ground. Does the black wire need to be grounded for HI-Beam?

Dumb Question: Will Hi-Beam work if bike is off? Too lazy to go out the shop and check.

Any other reason besides bad bulb:bang: that the Hi would not work?

Thanks,

My recollection the harness that connects to the bulb has three wires which are all in the harness. Now this harness connects under the tank along the back bone of the frame. So if it's all hooked up then I would say the bulb is bad.

Thanks Erldawg,

I went out just before bed to check it out again, and they both worked fine. Then tonight I went to cruise and the low didn't but the Hi did; exactly opposite of last night. I started the bike and they both work fine. That's f'in weird. Guess we will see what tomorrow brings.

I also found out something interesting from Adjure; their iron cross and skull lamp are not compatible with their own 5 3/4" buckets. For some reason the lamp is too thick and does not allow the bezel cord to push more than 3/4 of the way through channel. These lamps work in any other bucket application with the screw-in bezel but not with the Adjure pressure lock system.

I must have spent three hours trying to get the nylon rod through the channel to seal the bezel into bucket, and when I call Adjure today the guy knew right away the two would not fit. He said they are in the process of fixing it, but just word of warning to anyone looking for a new lamp and bucket.

The headlight on Big Dogs, grounds through the EHC, so yes, the ground needs connected in the harness and CAN NOT be grounded through the bucket.

It has to do the the software in the EHC that monitors the amount of current draw for the EHC to automatically switch from low to high or vice versa when one goes out. It uses the headlight ground within the EHC to do this. Eliminating the ground or grounding the headlight through the bucket, in cases I have tried, only cause the EHC to get locked up or one or the other low/high beam to not work like in your case.
