jel,

You're going to need a "Sky Hook" to reinstall.

You'll need an "Elbow Winch" to tighten it back up.

And you're going to need some "Possum Innereds" to keep it from falling back out.

Can anyone else think of anything I might have missed?

Hope this helps! :2thumbs:

How about a can of Prop Wash???

Jel,
You'll need to check the hole for the set screw in the lower tree really good. Sometimes the set screw is so deep you really can't see it. If you find it great, remove it completely. Purchase or order another lower stem cap from Wicked Bastard (Nelson is a member) or whomever you want.

Here you go
TRIPLE TREES

CLEANING, INSPECTION AND REPAIR:
On K9, Ridgeback and Pitbull, inspect fork stop tab (58) on bottom neck cup and replace bottom cup and race, if necessary.
On Chopper and Mastiff, inspect fork stop tab (47) on frame neck. If significant
damage is noted, contact Big Dog Motorcycles Technical Support for instruction.
Inspect bearings (45) and races (46). Replace with Timken® bearings and races, only. Mixing brands of races and bearings could result in irregular steering and clearance issues in the neck assembly.
ASSEMBLY:
Install the two roll pins (50) into lower triple tree (42). Use the fork stop plate (47) as a depth guide. The pins should be flush with the top of the fork stop plate.
Apply Loctite 2440 to threads of 10-24 x 3/8" screws (56) and install fork stop plate into lower triple tree.
INSTALLATION:
Pack bearings (45) with bearing grease. Install bearings (45) and dust cover (44) in the top of the neck.
Apply Loctite 2440 to threads of neck stem (43) and install into upper tree (41). Tighten until the stem (43) bottoms out in the upper tree (41).
Apply Loctite 2440 to threads of 5/16-18 x 3/8" set screw (55) and install into upper tree. Torque to 16 ft.lbs.
Install upper tree (41) and stem (43) on frame neck.
Install lower tree (42) with bearing and snug stem cap (49).
Install forks, handlebars, wheel, brake caliper and fender. Leave the 1/4-20 x 1" pinch screws (14) loose on the right lower leg.
On Ridgeback, Chopper and K9 models, mount the fork brace (39).
Adjust fall-away.
Apply Loctite 2440 to threads of the
5/16-18 x 5/8" set screw (57) at the lower tree. Torque to 16 ft.lbs.
Torque the four 5/16-18 x 1-1/4" pinch screws (54) on lower tree to 16 ft.lbs.
While applying the front brake, work the front end up and down. This should free any bind condition.
Torque th~ two 1/4-20 x I" pinch screws (14) at the bottom of the right lower leg to 12 ft.lbs-.

NOTE: Thoroughly clean threads of all screws removed prior to assembly. Thoroughly clean internal threads at all screw locations. Use Loctite products as indicated. Use torque values specified.

FALL-AWAY
Support motorcycle in an upright position so the front end is completely suspended.
If clutch cable pulls the front end one way or the other, disconnect it.
Place a suitable marking material, such as masking tape, over the fender tip.
Install a pointer on the floor. The pointer indicates the center of the fender with the front end straight ahead.
Loosen lower 5/16-18 x 1-1/4" triple tree pinch screws (54) and remove 5/16-18 x 5/8" set screw (57).
Gently tap the fender on one side until the front end begins to fall away by itself. Mark this point.
When properly adjusted, the distance between the fall-away mark and the center point should be 1-2 inches.
NOTE: If fall-away is more than two inches, loosen the fork stem cap (49). If fall-away is less than one inch, tighten the fork stem cap.
Tighten the lower 5/16-18 x 1-114" triple tree pinch screws (54) and torque to 16 ft·lbs.
Apply Loctite 2440 to threads of the 5/16-18 x 5/8" set screw (57) and torque to 16 ft·lbs.
Check fall-away to be sure it is within the specification.

A second set screw is not required in the lower tree, "BUT" it is a "GOOD" Idea due to the extra depth available. Install second set screw just like the first.

This is a wonderful description of the proceedure, and looks as though it was taken right out of the service manual.

I could not help but notice that the phrase "head set' is not used anywhere in this proceedure...perhaps if the right terminology had been used in the initial question, the desired answer would have been arrived at more quickly, and without the good natured ribbing that usually goes on here.
