They are in 2 parts pull the top piece out then push the bottom piece out.

As with most of my "How-to" posts, I forget to take the pictures before I start. However, I took the rubber out and spun them around so the thicker side was facing me. After cleaning everything up I remounted the bars and it appears the handgrips are about 3 inches higher. I had to readjust my mirrors and I noticed I gained a little distance between the speedo and the top of the tank. Now my hands are about shoulder height, which is exactly what I was after.
