Had a setback tonight

Energy One
Tested out the electrical system last night everything was good!
Was going to test out the ignition coil tonight but forgot to reconnect a ground .. Hooked up the battery and smoke everywhere. Looks like I burnt the fuse box and the positive wire from the starter to the fuse and the wire from the voltage regulator to the fuse.. Really hoping I didn't fry the v/r. The wires we're burnt up to the butt splice from the fuse box but the wires to the v/r look good.
Had a long day at work and should have waited but I rushed things ! Lesson learned

Ouch! Sounds like more than a failure to "reconnect a ground."

Unless that ground was connected to the "+" battery post.

That sucks Paul, I am checking out my charging system also to make sure everything is "ok", I was thinking about working on it tonight but I am way too tiered, and after reading your post I am glad I didn't! Hopefully your VR is ok also, get some rest and try again later!

Made all of my most costly mistakes pushing past that level of tired that we should never push past.
Good Luck, I hope its minor clean up for you so you can move on.

So far burnt the wire that connects from the post on the starter to the fuse box and the wire from the v/r to the fuse. Everything else look intact. I will need to checkout the v/r but the wire looks good so we will see.
Thanks

No, after tracing things out I hooked the negative side up first... Caught a spark.. I know I messed that up it was a long day and I decided to work on the bike.

I tried again today and made sure positive was hooked up first on the battery soon as I hooked up the negative sparked again this time I didn't continue . Removing all the wiring and checking wires. Found the ground on the horn had broken free??? Hope this is the problem... More to follow re wiring it now

Don't forget to check your headlight to make sure the Plug is not melted and causing a short in the system. I you find out your VR has gone bad, I have a new one that I'll sell you for $65.00 shipped. :2thumbs:

Plug is in good shape...

I am going through the Deutsch connector to check the pins.

Checked the battery terminal crimps and they are in good shape and have continuity.

What type of v/r do you have Carlos? I am not thinking it's the v/r but just in case.

The v/r on the bbc does not have a ground wire I think it is an accel aftermarket v/r and is grounded to the frame. It only has 3 wires 2 go to the stator plug the other wire goes to the positive side of the fuse. "Copper"
Thanks

For what its worth... It doesnt matter how many wires, just must be the same specs.

My old VR also had 3 wires only.... New one has 4, a ground wire which I hooked it up to the frame through one of the two VR bolts.

So on your old v/r no ground wire? My pittbull v/r grounds to the v/r bolt also... I am chasing electrical gremlins and trying figure out what could be causing it to spark. I hooked the same battery on my pitbull with no issues. This sucks
Thanks Franco

Correct, my old vr had no ground wire. New one yes, I cut it to the right length, put a ring on it and stuck it on one of the VR´s bolts to the frame. Purrfect!

Actually, if you want quality and performance, how many wires it has makes a world of difference. A 4 wire, barring it being a 3 phase instead of single, will likely be a "Series" type regulator, which is what you want. Series regulators, such as the CompUFire, will reduce the load on your charging system, help keep your primary cooler and should always be used all BDs with a BD EHC.

That is what my bd is running. I am actually looking at replacing my negative battery lug. It has some minor "discoloration" on the terminal and this is the wire that keeps sparking. Cleaned both battery terminal and checked the wires everything looks good on the cables except the wear also checked them with my voltmeter both of continuity and resistance. Hoping to nail it down to not making clean contact to the post.

The one I have is Stock VR that I got as a spare from BDM before they went under. It has three wires one wire goes to the Circuit Breaker or 40 Amp Fuse before the battery and two wires to the stator plug. I now use a Compu-Fire 40 Amp 3 Phase Charging System, so I really don't have any reason to keep a spare stock VR around anymore.
