Growl when releasing clutch? Syn. primary oil??

Just had the inner primary leaks fixed and just had a few time when releasing the clutch I hear a growl kinda sound and feels like a slip of the clutch? I just had some shop fix an inner primary leak and they put in syn. oil in the primary, I thought I read somewhere on here that this oil is not good for primary oil? Is it possible this could cause some kind of clutch slipping? I put full throttle in 3rd gear and no slip?

This has only happened when the bike is just started. I have a primo pro clutch as installed by Big Dog.

Check owner's manual. I believe it states (and has also been mentioned here) that you cannot use syn for primary. Many (including me) do use syn for engine.

they might have overfilled the primary (or used too heavy a fluid but less likely) causing the plates to stick when its cold. By the way, I use fully synthetic in my primary so I wouldn't worry about that.

Rode the bike last night and its seems to do it a little more often only in first, maybe its simply slipping? but with the noise it makes me wonder whats happening. I checked and the BD manual actually says they do not recommend the syn oil for primary so I will put some dino in it just in case. I can't believe the syn oil would have a bad effect on the clutch?

Up Date!

I did find the clutch was not correctly adjusted, with the clutch cable adjusted to shortest length the clutch lever was 1/4 inch from the grip, you would think a shop that works on HD type of bikes would know how to adjust a clutch:job:

But anyway after the adjustment its seems to be good, the growl I was hearing was the clutch slipping, guess its been a long time since I heard a clutch slip!!

So I also called Rivera Engineering Technical support and Tom told me they do not recommend the synthetic oil with the Primo clutch with kevlar fiber disc. He told be Rev-Tech primary oil is OK but in his opinion Dextron III is best since Autos in Cars also use Kevlar clutch disc.

Kinda funny, Primo recommends Dextron but BDM put the bike together with all Rev-Tec oils??

mine has never slipped with synthetic. I guess some do and some don't

Changed mine to Red Line - Primary Syn oil w/Shock proof and it seemed to run even better. Baker does say Dextron III is also good to run.

Guys,

I have a primo pro clutch with kevlar fiber disc, (as installed by BDM) Primo says "No synthetic" with this clutch, I removed it and put in Dextron III ATF and it has never been better since I got this bike 7k miles ago.

I think this debate depends on the clutch installled, Kevlar or not? Primo or Baker or bandit will bepend on the manufacture.

Not trying to be a smart azz here or anything, but "Baker" makes & supplies your tranny, "Not Primary" wet clutch assembly! The primary & trans. oil reservoirs are not common like in many H-Ds.
I've found that Synthetic Oil sometimes causes the clutch too "creep" when disengaged (applied). Prefer "Red Line"
But back to the "growling" sound? That's "clutch pack chatter" vibrations created by clutch slippage!
I'd check the primary fluid level (proper fluid a must!)& the chain adjustment first,
if nothing is incorrect, then I would inspect the clutch assembly for problems.

just my thoughts here, Good Luck! :2thumbs:
Sounds like Danosrs has the fix on the adjustment. Maybe I thought you were saying Baker did not make a clutch assy. No Drama Mate, just changed mine from a 12pack to a 9pack and its good-running Red Line.
