Grinding noise from in the primary

Has anyone had an issue with a grinding noise from in the primary. It happend the other day comming back from a rally. I was riding down the highway straight and constant speed when it felt like I drug something. I didnt think anything about it until it did it again. It feels and sound like when you turn a corner and drag your pegs on the ground, but this is happening while going straight. Then the other day I started the bike up and it made a grinding sound for 2-3 seconds. It sounded like it was comming from the clutch area inside the primary. Does anyone have any good guesses. I am one of those fix it myself people but not the best at diagnosis.
Thanks in advance.

Could be the shoe. How the hell does that happen on an 03. Can't have that many miles, maybe ran low on primary oil.

Don't ride the bike until you figure out the problem. It'll just grind up more stuff!

It's more than likely your ignition with the weights coming off and welding themselves to the crank ro grinding up. That is what happened to mine and Big Dog would not warranty my bike because they said I hit the rev limiter 436 times in 7 months. Isn't that what a rev limiter is for? Needless to say I replaced the ignition componemts and teh shaft and rebuilt the motor.

Rootboy,
Glad to have you. Why not post an introduction and stick around for a while? We need all the help we can get but we like to know who we're getting it from too. Welcome to the pound.

We can all throw darts at the wall, until you open her up thats all it is, so my 2 cents is open up the primary and get back to us :2thumbs:

Hollywood is right!!! Way too many things it could be. Open'er up, take a look inside and get back to us. Could be something as simple as a loose chain or something else that could cause bigger issues by riding even more.

I had that grinding noise once. Went through the primary several times, but it never left...It was the tranny-had to have a total rebuild...:flag:

Just started having a similar noise. Sounds like a grinding noise but I only hear it in 1st and second gear. If I put it in neutral it stops. I am thinking clutch bearing carrier. I see one on ebay for $40. I think I'll jump on it, JIC! Any thoughts gentlemen? Broton what did you find on your problem?

Yep same thing here had the tranny rebuild it was the countershaft bolt backing out and hitting the back inside primary cover. Mine only did it in
4-6th gears. Runnin great now!

grinding noise

I spent some time on the phone with Big Dog, ST. Louis! The tech there talked to me for 30 min. explaining everything. I thought it was going to be a bad compensator sprocket but the tech said in 9 years he has only seen 2 failures. He told me to check my alternator sprocket. I got it all tore apart and sure enough, the alternator sprocket had wore smooth and had no splines on it to sit on that main shaft. It also created a horrible vibration for the last couple weeks. Anyway, got a new one and bolted it on!
