Grease out of Pulley Cover Assy.

For about the last month, I've been getting grease dripping from the Pulley Cover Assy. It's running down onto the frame and back to the lower swing arm and rear wheel. It's been cleaned up and it continues to happen. This has never happened before (been riding it for almost 2 yrs/15,000 miles). Does anyone have any ideas?

It has grease in there for your ball ramp assembly

Chris---that's it. I had it to the dealer, they said it's only grease. I had them check the tranny-what I can't figure out is, why now? and why does it keep doing it? I can't seem to stop it. You'd think I'd lose all the excess grease after a time or two.:bang:

sounds like your pulley nut is loose and your dripping trans fluid.

I'd have to agree with Sul on this one!

Mine came loose a couple years ago. I determined the problem when I would back it out of the garage it would walk on the shaft and rub the inner side of the cover making noise so had it checked out and this is what they found. No leakage though;

I've had it to the dealer twice---they say it's only grease, not tranny. Everything else looked ok. I'm lost

Only grease in there is in the ball and ramp assembly. Have you or the shop checked the gasket?
Also, could it be oil that is mixed with road grime. Could be a leaking oil line near the oil pump or excess oil coming out of a freshly oil clutch cable.

Ray-the dealer said all was "ok". That's what I can't figure-such a small greased area to keep producing so much leakage. I've checked over all the lines to make sure it wasn't coming from somewhere else. Tranny never has lost any-dipstick still shows full.:bang: :bang:

Looks too thin to be Grease... I'm leaning towards the trans leak as well.

Being that I'm just a mechanic, did anybody ever think of smelling the stuff to see if it smells like grease or tranny oil? You can't mistake the smell of tranny oil.

your big radius pipes are too close to the pulley cover causing the grease to get hot and break down.

You could pull the cover and clean up the ramp & bearings and re-grease using a good hi-temp grease.

Maybe need a NEW dealer (if it has been good up to now for all those miles and they just say its OK and don't worry!). Sounds like the old high-on-grass hippy singing "Don't worry, be Happy"!!

I wouldn't accept that answer when your bike is leaking all over your chrome and nice paint job. That should only be reserved as an excuse for bikes such as my old AMC bowling ball company Shovelhead!!

My dealer has always been outstanding----it was repacked last fri-----Pipes have been on it since new (almost 2 yrs)--I've got a email off to BDM and just waiting on a reply.

Ray... that is crazy...that it did that!! WOW!

That is alot of grease coming out... dogvet may be right on the break down. I have nothing but mobil 1 grease in mine now. When I was having a clutch issue I took it apart again, cleaned it REAL good, inspected then repacked with all mobil 1. A tube of that grease is a must have in any garage IMO.

Thanks Chris, I think I've found the problem. The wiper seal has a tear about half way around!!!! I have no idea how the mechanic missed it. I cleaned everything up, and there it was. Big as Dallas.

Chris-are you using Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease ? or do they have a hi-temp?

Any tech, no matter how green, should not have missed it. Says to me that it was never checked - or its a bad shop. Glad you're "grease-less" again...
