Got a problem

When I tried to start my bike, I hit the ignition and it started to crank, I released the start button and it continued to crank, I even took the key out and it was still crankin. For about a half hour afterward after the battery died, the starter was too hot to even touch. Any ideas? Help?

first, why didn't you get in there and disconnect the + battery cable and bring that shit to a halt? Hopefully the starter/EHC will be OK, but who knows after such an event.
I think theres a couple of things that could have happened, 1) a malfuction on the circuit board that contains the start button 2) a malfunfuction in the EHC( if you have one ). Normally you could have disconnected the battery and have things reset and try it again. This works sometimes on a number of wierd things that bikes with a EHC can do.
Charge or replace the battery and see what happens. Go over wiring particular to the start system < general 2 cents worth---no bike info>

Should have just unhooked the ground on the battery....:bang:

If you lucky the starter and battery are not fried with 30 mins of churning. Grab the battery take it and get it load tested see if it comes back okay. If it does charge it on a tender overnight and rehook up to the bike and give it a whirl. You may have just needed a hard reset, although I would clean and apply di-electric grease to the main power harness on the EHC while you are in there.

If it happens again disconnect the ground or power wire.

In the end you might want to take your starter to a shop and have it tested as well.

I can't believe you let it crank that long. I had a starter short out internally and do the same thing. But I yanked the wire to shut it down before it would hurt anything else. I'd pull the starter and open it up and see how the contacts look. Or find an electrical shop that can test it for you.

Guys he said that after half an hour the starter was still hot, not that it was cranking for half an hour.

Granted I would have stopped it after several seconds and not let it go till the battery died.

Now the starter is most likely toast. I would start with sending it to WSW and get it rebuilt.

Oh and Ride the Lightning no need to double post your problems in two different forums.

Welcome to the site I'm sure someone has had a run away starter before and may have advise.
