Ok, so i have some sort of knocking noise going on, on my 04 Ridgeback. It seems to be coming from behind the derby cover, like something is loose in there. I am guessing i need to get that cover off to take a look? Any pointers to removing it like oil covering my garage floor / what i need to be looking for? Thanks in advance :2thumbs:

You should be able to pull the cover and not get an oil bath. Look for a loose clutch hub nut. Good luck Gary.

put a catch pan under the drain plug, then put a bunch of newspaper under the full length of the primary before you pull it open after removing the screws. all the oil will not come out of the plug. you will probably need a new gasket/o-ring, whichever yours takes.

Since your doing this. Go ride the bike for 1/4 mile and heat up the oil. This will allow easy drainage. Pull your drain plug and drain your primary. Your probably due for an oil change there anyway. Heating up the oil helps get more of it out from clutches. Have on hand. New oil, oil catch pan, and gasket or O-rings once you remove derby cover. Look for a few things. 1. Clutch nut loose or has backed out. 2. Nylon chain tension wedge had either come loose or wedge has broken allowing chain to grind on primary cover inner side. On inside primary cover drive chain is ajusted and rides over a nylon tension wedge. Once in a while these wedges wear prematurely or break. There suppose to be good for 50,000 miles. But what is made by man is always susceptible to break at any time! . That's what happened to me and that was the final straw for me to go Open Primary. Ordered my BDL with a Lock Up clutch that afternoon! Best add on I have ever put on my dog!
