Good tip on finding neutral

I thought I was going to have some transmission issues after having the clutch adjusted for not being able to find neutral. While doing a search and enjoying a cold one I came across a post on shifting problems and finding neutral, and it worked great. So now I just give it few more RPM's and it falls right into neutral.

No more problems, and the dog is even more pleasure to ride now. :2thumbs:

Guess I will have to find another way to spend my money (perhaps some pipes).

This is site is the best cost effective modification I have done to date!:2thumbs:

yep - although with a properly functioning well adjusted clutch you should even need to do that - I know I don't

possibly needs lube on the heim joints on the shifter linkage.
That's what I originally thought, however as I lubed up the heim joints a few weeks back and still was unable to shift into neutral. My next step would be to look deeper into the clutch assembly and if anything was found, I would upgrade the clutch to see if that would cure the problem as others have suggested.

Happens sometimes to me, Heim's seem fine but when all else fails, when shutting her down, kill it and shift her in by hand. Foot may still be trembling from all the excitment.

Didn't know, but thanks. Shifted nicely on Sunday when I went to Bakers in Milford for the last Car show of the season. Good turn out. What'd ya lube her with by the way?

Yep, Know exactly what you mean. I have always thought it was ridiculous how guys are always reving up thier motors at red lights. Why can't they just let the damm thing idle. WELL.....Now I find my self reving my damm bike trying to find neutral. So glad to here it's not just my bike. I was starting to think something was wrong. Thanks for the info.:2thumbs:
Damm....I got screwed....My bike didn't come with a Hemie!

check the heim joints and make sure they are in line with each other (both are straight up and down). sometimes, if they are out of line, they will bind. before changing out the clutch, try going the cheaper route of changing out the joints. would be bad to pay the price of a new clutch and then find out you are no better off.

We discovered the mis-alignment issue is very common with bdm. They have alot of them out of line. STUPID

Took the bike back over to a local shop to adjust the clutch again, this is the second time, plus I re-lubed the heim joints and made sure they were aligned. Still have to rev up the motor to shift in to neutral.

Is there anything else to check? Both bike shops thought that this bike did not shift easily into neutral for a high end bike. One shop suggested that adding a transition plate similar to what metric bikes use may help find neutral easier. Has anyone ever heard of adding some kind of neutral finding plate to their transmission/clutch?

So even with having to rev a few rpm's, I still have a blast driving the Big Dog around. I stopped at a Yorktown Pub for lunch a cold one today and was amazed at the people walking by and pointing at the bike, one person even stopped and took several photos.

Best comment was from the barmaid who is interested in a ride later after closing. :2thumbs:

only other thing i can think of is the possibility of the clutch plates being worn out. pull the clutch and check it.

worn pushrod? primary chain tension? ball and ramp?
ya, lee. could be worn end on the pushrod. somewhere stated, end of pushrod is case hardened and once the hardened end is gone, it wears really fast.

shortened pushrod = discs not separating enough

yep - I had to replace mine although I got an 05 and they were known to be the wrong size

Mine was doing this and seemed to be getting worse. I did the primary thing with retorqing the clutch nut (mine probebly took about 20 ft lbs to break loose even with loktite). Adjusted the clutch per spec, friction on the rod back off 1/4 turn tighten and still had the same problem. Readjusted the clutch with about 1/8 turn back off and seems to be better.

Have there been any updates on clutch adjustment?
