General Question about 2004 BD K9

Arizona

New Member
Hi guys... Joe here. I have an opportunity to purchase a really clean, low mileage 2004 K9, however I am concerned about the facts that BD is out of business and all of the horror stories I'm seeing about the electrical system failure AND ACCIDENTS due to same.

Is there anyplace I can run the VIN to see what was done on the bike, or to confirm all service bulletins/recalls were handled? I am buying it from the 2nd owner, who has only put a few thousand miles on it and said the only service he has had done is oil changes.

Any insight would be appreciated. I'm a Harley guy and wanted to get this bike, but I'm having major reservations... Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

tell you what, you might want to find out what the guy is really trying to sell you because BDM didn't make the first K9 until '06.

as far as running the VIN, contact BDPP (big dog performance products). they are what is left of BDM and probably the only ones that can give you any info.

parts are still available (sometimes) but you have to keep an eye out for the parts you want. several different sources, check out our vendor list. plus S&S and Baker and PM are still around and we have several extremely knowledgeable people on here that are willing to help out answering questions.

Hope you know how to wrench.... These bike get exspencive, and funn as hell to ride! take the bike to a good mechanic you trust have him look it over.

BD's are a BLAST to ride, but you will have issues. First of all, though, the S&S, Baker, and PM stuff will not let you down, and that's the major portion of the equation. You WILL have electrical issues sooner or later but they are easy fixes, usually. Then other small stuff is possible-swelling gas cap inserts, peeling tank liners, etc. As items fail, simply replace them with quality HD components when possible, and you'll end up with a good looking bullet-proof ride. Furthermore, you can learn to do a lot of the work yourself, which should enable you to be more self-sufficient with any future bike purchases. If the price is right, go for it or you'll regret it the rest of your life. Seems like you have yourself pretty well talked into it already.
