Gas tank rattle?

Had a noise developing and finally pinned it down to the tank vibrating against the frame at the rear. I can pull up on the front of the tank or push down on the rear and it quits. Anyone had this happen before and if so, what was the remedy? If not, do I just remove the 2 bolts underneath and slide the tank rearward to remove it?

Mine did the same thing twice. The dealer ended up changing out the rear tank mount. Has not happened since. That fucking speedometer though. Now that is aggrevating the fuck out of me.

mine does it too - not sure how your tan mounts compared to my 05 bulldog but my bracket toward the front of the tank has 3 holes for 2 bolts. I push the tank forward to use the back 2 holes - this moves the tank away from the frame near the seat and cures the problem - trouble is it is a fucker to do, which is why I hate taking my tank off. I probably need a new rear mount too.

Thanks guys. Got it. I pulled the tank to find the rubber thingy on the threaded stud had worn thru on the forward side. I'm riding tonight so I turned the thing around, put a 1" strip of weather stripping on top and put the tank back on. (not w/o a few choice words though) That thing was a muther to get the holes lined back up. Kinda like you Lee, i started to just use the forward holes but finally got it in place using a screwdriver in the front hole and pull forward with enough force to bend a pretty square shafted Craftsman screwdriver into a "J"............

Loafington, good luck on the speedo. Mine worked perfect until I took the bike in for the VR/fuse deal. Minute I fired it up my speedo was wacked. I just sucked it up and bought a new one. BDM has never done chit for me. :bang:

Yeah the fucking speedo sucks stinky balls. I have been living with the problem for now, I will address it when I have time. According to the tech at the dealer I bought my K9 from, you need a special tool to re-install the tank. I am sure you could make something that works but there is a tool for ease of installing the tank. It utilizes the tab that the seat attaches to and with a cam lever action toggle thingy, it pushes the tank forward onto the rear rubber mount. He showed me how it works, looks easy enough.

Lee, the way I did it didn't involve the threads. Lord knows it was tough enough with the threads in good shape. I pushed the tank forward all I could. Even put the rear pegs down and used them for my feet to push against. The forward hole on the 3 hole plate was just beyond the stationary mount. First I was only able to get an 1/8" allen up in there. Finally got enough room to put the screwdriver. Never put it in the threaded hole, just pryed against the front side of the mount. Had a tiedown strap around the bars, holding the tank up against the mount. Another tiedown strap holding the bars straight. An extra hand would have made it a whole lot easier..................Rode til 2:00am this morning and never had the rattle so I assume its ok for now. I dont wanna have to pull the tank again....EVER.lol

Now if I can just get these dang baffels back in the Mean Mothers

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to invest in the tank installation fixture doober. Worth the expense versus the asspain of fixing what one could fuck up trying to do it another way. Based on what I have read thus far, it is a major pain in the ass to re-install ones tank without a tool like the one the tech at the dealer had. I am not sure what it costs but I am sure it is less than the damage from trying to do it another way.

I recently had the same rattling, vibrating annoying sounds (2006 K-9) too. Took the tank off & saw the rear stud mounted rubber had broken through the top. Think I paid around $12 for a new one. To reinstall the tank,I had a buddy sitting on the bike pushing it forward & lifting slightly was a big help. Great to find out all the little things to get you ready for when the shit hits the fan. Spoke too soon, trans is acting up now! Oh well, that's why I'm glad I found this place.

I had the same problem and had the dealer work on twice. The third time I decided to fix it my self and I did. Here is what I did. :D Much better and not rattle
