Isn't your speedo attached to the tank? Has a good sized Allen bolt at the bottom of the speedo?

Its a split tank....finding new gas caps was almost impossible....at any rate gas leaked out of the left gas cap and bubbled the paint on the side of the tank...so got to figure how to take the dash off then how to tank off...

Is your speedo attached to your tank? There is a large sized Allen bolt at the bottom of the speedo. Remove that, then there should be a small screw right at the front of the seat that holds the cover that hides the gap between the tanks. There are two bolts at the front of the tank by the neck, need to remove both. Then there are two nut under the cover. Take the speedo off, then the cover, then disconnect the cross over fuel tube in front of the tank by the neck. Then remove both bolts. Remove fuel line from petcock. Then remove the bolts at the rear of the tank

To remove the dash panel take the Allen bolt under the words Big Dog out then remove the one near the seat. These bolts may have plastic caps in the Allen hole that need popped out to get a wrench in them. Carefully un plug the wires from the speedometer. The dash panel is plastic. Handle with care. Don't lose the rubber strips.

You will need to drain the gas out. Turn off the petcock on the bottom of the left tank. Remove the fuel line from the caborator on the right side and place it in a container. Now turn the petcock back on. Removing the gas caps may speed thing up a little.

Next remove the cross over hose from one or the other tanks.it is on the bottom front.

Remove the vent hose that connects the tanks at the top which was under the dash panel.

Next remove the bottom front bolt from one side. They are close to where you took the cross over hose off. Next remove the rear bolt which is under the dash panel just in front of the seat. Hold on to the tank! It may come off easily or you may have to move it up and down a little. It is in rubber groments that need to come free.

Do the same on the other side.

Where did the gas leak from?

Good luck!

thanks SO much !!! some how it leaked out of the left gas cap which I never use .
If you don't fill both tanks you are only filling one tank. The gas only transfers thru a small hose from right to left. You need to fill both tanks to get a full fuel load.
