Gas Cap

I bought my 2003 Big Dog Chopper used. When I bought it, it came with this type of gas cap. I think it is some type of paint saver type cap and insert. I have several questions:

1.) Is this the way it came or was this done after-market?

2.) The actual cap is chrome but it is somewhat scratched up and I was wanting to replace it with a more "novelty" type one, do I have to replace the cap and the insert?

3.) If it is after-market are they worth the hassle, regardless whether it is after-market or not should I just remove it?

4.) If so will the insert just screw out with the proper tool?

Thanks for any and all help in advance. I have included a picture of the cap and the insert.

That it the stock cap w/ paint saver. With the right tool you can screw that saver out. Once that is out you can use any standard thread gas cap. You can get the same kind of gas cap from Drag Specialties if you want to replace with the same

I might have an extra tool if you need one. the holes that are drilled on the inside should not be there.

Thanks for the response coolbreeze, I kinda wanted to replace the cap with something like this

But is it a good idea to remove the insert? It would be nice to have something like in the picture but if removing the insert is not a good idea I'll just buy a replacement from drag specialties.

$10.00 for the tool. And yes I would take it out and run the cap you want. Those stock caps swell up in the hot summers and sometimes its impossable to get it off. You may half to buff the paint that was under the the paint saver. if you want the tool IM me your E-mail and I'll send you a invoice from paypal.

It's sent coolbreeze, thanks.

I know what you're talking about. Several times this past summer I didn't think I was going to be able to get the top off.

Those paint saver rings are epoxied in, so it will fight you. Might be a good idea to put down several layers of masking tape around it before you start trying to get it off. That's what I do. One wrong move and you could end up with a bad scratch. Also, these are installed within days of the paint being completed, so removing it will likely tear the clear underneath. Sometimes I run a thin wire underneath the ring after I get it loose, just to be safe. Be careful and you'll be ok!

I replaced mine with a Kuryakyn flush mount cap and insert. Had issues with the Bigdog cap getting stuck would have to use channellocks to remove.

I will buy the 1st round
http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/how/14421-paint-saver-removal-tool.html Luke I have had the market on the paint saver thing. My tank went back to bigdog 2 times they replaced it both times but it would not vent correctly and the fuel got under the paint, I have all of the research on it.. the thing is put in with "JB Weld Fuel Tank" which melts at 600 degree. YOU DO NOT NEED TO GET IT THAT HOT. only need it to release the paintsaver (1st) cover the paint with something, I used alumin speed tape then Just use a heat gun or hair dryer in the center three or four times get it hot then let it soak a bout 30 seconds then do it again. it will just spin right out. I went with the flush mounted setup from J&P looks killer and no more mess..you can see the issues I had with out heat and the B.S."removal" tool. I just got an easy out and it was the best 15 bucks I have ever spent..Mike

Thanks everyone for the input. This is what I finally did.

When I removed the old insert there was a little damage around the edge where the insert covered the paint. I just bought one of those paint savor plus rings and put it over the top of the hole and used this after market cap. To me it looks a hell of a lot better, plus I was having some of the same issues others were having, gas leaking and the cap swelling in the summer time. Since I did this I have had no more problems.

Again thanks everyone.

I'm unable to find any replacement gas caps on the Low Down Chop Shop site. Do they still make them?
Thanks

Just sent Jake a e-mail this week about the caps, he is out of stock and does not know if he will do another run of caps.
