gas cap/ paint lifting

I did some searching and found the paint bubbling issue is quite common on the Big Dogs. Haven't found out how to actually cure the problem. My bike has the Landmark paint saver and gas cap. Yesterday it was hot here and went for a ride. When I got back the cap wouldn't unscrew, it would just spin the cap. It had been leaking when I was riding and wanted to see if the venting was full of gas. The tank was only about half full. I ended up putting a bag of ice on top of the cap and let it sit a while. It screwed right out after a half hour of the ice application. During my search I found that the plastic screw part expands because it absorbs some gasoline. This sucks for sure as if I need gas, don't want to be sitting waiting for the screw portion to shrink down. I filed it some and applied some grease and will see what happens today. The paint around the paint saver has been bubbling for some time now. I took some alcohol and cleaned around the edge of the paint saver and applied some clear fingernail polish. I will need to have the tank repainted though as the paint is totally screwed up. Has anyone actually CURED:feedback: this problem for good? I have a couple other bikes and have never had a problem with leaks, venting or paint lifting.

I've seen several members having issues with their paint saver gas caps. As of yet no problems with my 02 Pit. I think it's the Ethnol that's f@cking up the plastic screw part along with a lot of other issues. I put my chainsaw in the shop for some carb work. When i got it back I was having a hard time getting the damn plastic gas cap to screw in. It was like it was cross threaded. Went back to the shop and was told it's the ethnoal they are putting in the gas causing them to swell up. Bought a new cap and be damn if it did not screw right in.

Yes, I did read of the ethanol causing the swelling. Unfortunately here in the midwest it is hard to find a non-ethanol product. This seems to be a situation where the cap and the paint saver are both causing problems. Fumes migrating under the paint saver, plus actual leaking and running down the tank from the cap. There has to be some way to cure the problem and I am not going to repaint my tank til I find something that works.

If you find a solution to this please let me know, my tank is starting to peal up also and will need to be painted soon.

Will do..... I have tried the clear nail polish around the paint saver to stop the paint bubbling. Put it on and let it dry overnight. So far it seems to be working, but I only rode a short distance today. Someone here on the forum suggested this to stop any further damage.

After sending my tank back 3 times, i am now in the habit of taking my gas cap off for a couple of hours when its parked in a trailer or garage. The bike is so darn hot after a ride i think the gas fumes condensate around the gas cap causing the problem. it seems to be ok when parked outside after a ride. Since BDM is no longer in business, i have no one to send tank to. This has worked for me for the past 3 years

Heat is a part of the problem, both engine heat and air temp. I have started to do as you suggest, removing the cap. I am a little leery of fumes in a confined space, but there should be a sure cure. Maybe a different tank with another style cap/tank fuel inlet.
