Gas cap....HELP

Stuck left cap on 05 Pitbull, I got it off, now look at the pics, seems that I have two different types. It seems to me that the liner? came out with the cap? on the left side, looks nothing like the one on the right. The right cap is easy to use, and "clicks" when tight enough. Some epoxy and a rubber washer came off with the cap. NOW, best way to correct? New both sides, I havent removed anything, or just replace the left? Should I "upgrade" and with what. Any info or part#s would help. THANKS......

Yawn...been here with the 04 Pitbull...your paint saver came out with your cap..... so pick as much of the epoxy that is left in the threads on the tank and clean the paint saver and JB weld (or whatever epoxy they used at the factory) the thing back in after you separate the cap from the paint saver. There is a tool for tightening the paint saver so you don't mess up any paint on the tank. I would also drain the tank and flush with gas and filter it to remove and crap that dropped in when you removed the cap. After that, do not over tighten that cap!:2thumbs:

Make sure your left side cap isn't left hand (reverse) thread. I saw this on an 03 Mastiff once. Your paint saver is always gonna be right hand thread, so while you were honking on it to seperate that cap, you were tightening the cap and loosening the paint saver.

Your left side is reverse thread from the right, IT doesnt look like the left has a paint saver. I am going to guess that those big o ring gaskets are bad and they tried using something else to seal it. My bike has no paint saver and your left looks just like mine

Sorry....it does separate and it is reverse threaded. The nylon swells over time and that is why it feels like one piece. Channel locks and a vise with some penetrating oil is in order...maybe a heat gun to boot. Hear me now...believe me later:up:

Nope...you are looking at the top of the nylon threads that are part of the cap assembly...held together by the screw. Had the same thing on my 04 happen years ago.

I would cut the nylon out with a dremel tool or a small hole saw

LikeGdog said. You could get a paint saver for the left side that accepted a regular thread cap too.

I replaced my caps and paint savers with harley oem caps, '95 and up. Harley caps fit BD tanks perfectly once the paint savers are removed and function well, no leaks or trouble of any kind. Can't remember the exact price, but it's reasonable. More importantly, your problem is solved for good.
