Anybody do any Gas Aluminum welding? I watched Jessie James do it on TV (stop I know better, my brother swore he could snow ski because he watched Wide World of Sports on TV but that’s another story “Funny as Hell”), I was just wondering how hard it is. Is it like brazing thin metal???? I need to start making some more one off partz for da dog again…

Ok Ok, Ski story.
My older brother was working for me years ago in K.C.. They just built a small ski resort North of K.C.. Man made snow most of the time just a place you would go to get your legs back before heading west on I-70 for 12 hours!!!!! Well we were at work one afternoon and he wanted to try it… I can water ski hell how hard could it be I have seen it on Wide World of Sorts for years!!!!! That was it, ok ass hole get in the truck we are going now. He gets fitted for ski’s the guy asks him are you new at this of have ya been skiing before. “Oh I know what I’m doing trust me!!!” I stood quiet to the side.. He gets his skis and we head outside. He clips in and goes oh I would say 6 inches and bust his ass!!!!!!! He looks up at me and I said…..

I bet you didn’t see that shit on Wide World of Sports Jack Ass!!!!!!!!!!!!   :whoop:

Love putting Big Bro in his place!!!! :2thumbs:

hum... i bet its a little challenging. i do mostly mig welding on the trucks we build and i bought a tig welder and have been playing with it. its like walking, chewing gum, and patting head and rubbing stomach at same time. But im getting it down. steel is easy. alum. with a spool gun on mig easy. alum with tig is hard due to the puddle is hard to see. but i guess if it was easy everyone would be doing it

Tig welding aluminum is not too bad...
You need to run the welder on AC...
Helium gives you a hotter burn and easier cleaner weld, but not necessary.

Remember to let the arc draw in the rod, and feed it quickly to keep it from pulling the metal from edges of weld...

You will also want to ball off your tungsten by burning it on a piece of steel.

i have gas welded before, its alittle tricky but not to much different then tig. with tig you can adjust the heat. you cant with the gas so thats about it as far as i know. very similar to brazing. tig welding is easy after you do it for a minute.

Did it a long time ago while in the military, never got to great on aluminum with Tig, but could get the job done, not as pretty as Jesse's though. Did some Titanium also and actually had some folks at the Aircraft Rebuild facility teach me, now that was interesting do to have to pretty much put the shit in a enclosed container to insure that it does not oxgenate.

One of these days would like to buy the whole set-up and do some more and get better at it. Can do some precise work on some very thin stuff once one gets it down. Seen some of those heavy hitters do the weld the aluminum can together, amazing shit and some talent for sure. Would love to have half of that talent.
