Fuel Tank Bubble Troubles

Hello, I need to know if anyone else has had trouble with their paint bubbling around the filler neck. My 07 K9 has been repainted twice, and has once again bubbled. believe e I have been extremely careful when filling, and not to overfill the tank. I have heard that Harley had this trouble at one time but fixed the problem, and that Big Dog had not worked this out before going out of buisness. any truth to this? something about not sealing the inner insert to tank. one paint shop used some sort of sealant but it too failed after a couple years. I would appreciate any input....Thanks

I originally posted this in the swapmeet section, sorry:bang:

have '07 K9 here and as of yet, had no trouble with the paint. same as you, just make sure i do not overfill and try not to leave it sitting in direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

(will delete the swap meet thread.)

I have the same problem and others have also. If you have the Landmark paint saver ring the fuel gets under it and eventually gets under the paint and causes the bubbling. I have tried a number of fixes with limited success. The last thing I tried is a rubber gasket from a bath tub spring loaded stopper. It has worked the best of anything so far. Others have removed the paint saver ring and installed a different cap system. The one I am going to try is the Kuryakyn part no 8309. Another member on this site has one and has no leakage problem or paint issues since the installation.

I had the problem so i took out the saver ring changed styles of cap and the painter actually sealed around the paint in cap area with super glue...worked like a charm.

I just painted my bike and it did the same thing, and a frind of mine's K-9 was doing the same thing. I removed the tank protector and made a washer to go under it that was bigger than the messed up paint. Then siliconed under the washer and resealed the tank protector. Looks great and seems to be working. Beast of all I didn't have to fix the paint. give me a few minutes and I'll go take a pic of it.

Here's the pictures, hope you can see them ok. Mine is made of brass, because I have a lot of brass accents on the bike. The one I made for Ed's K-9 I made out of stainless steel and polished it to a mirrior finish. The top of a K-9 tank is kind of rounded so the washer will have to be cupped alittle, on my 03 chopper the tank was flat enough to accept a flat washer

Steve, My 2009K-9 paint bubbled around the paint saver also. I was real carefull not to overfill the gas tank. That didn't stop the problem. I did something similar to what Shannon did. I got a piece of polished one side Stainless steel sheet metal from McMaster Carr. Put it between 2 boards and clamped them together. Then I cut a washer out with 2 different size hole saws. The washer is just big enough to hide the bubbled paint. I glued it in place with silicone adhesive. Then put the paint saver in with the same adhesive. It looks alot like chrome. Has worked so far. Good Luck !
