Fuel delivery problem (I think)

Bought an 05 BD Mastiff a month ago and have had this problem since I bought the bike. If you havent read my intro Ill start from the beginning.

Bought the bike from Bikers Dream over a month ago. First weekend riding the bike did pretty well but started having a stalling issue Sat morning and then again on Sunday night. Would be riding down the Hwy and my dog would start to sputter and then eventually stall at speed. Pull over check fuel level, plug wires, EHC LED's, etc. Fuel was at half a tank so I put it in Res and she started back up and got home. Didnt seem to have any electrical issues at all (lights, ignition still working) electrical aspect of the bike seems fine.

Called Bikers Dream and they picked up the bike to look it over. Found the entire clutch assembly was screwed and the replaced everything with a brand new BD clutch, free of charge (NICE!) Got the dog back and took her for a spin, everything seemed fine. Went riding the following Sat morning and it started to stall again while riding. Went to the gas station to fill up and didnt have any probs until I got past 55 miles on the full tank. Started to stall again while riding. Filled up and the prob went away.

Next weekend pulled off the gas tanks, drained them, pulled the petcock and checked everything. Couldnt see anything in the tank or on the petcock filter. Dont have a scope to look inside the tank but looked as good as possible with a small flash lighe. Pulled the valve out of the gas cap because I thought it may be vapor lock. Reinstalled everything, filled her up. Got 50 miles on a full tank and it started to stall at speed AGAIN, topped off the tank and prob went away.

Stalling only seems to happen after Ive gone thru a little over half a tank of gas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Any ideas Dog Dudes?

not familiar with the (2) tank bikes but isn't there a tube that connects the 2 tanks. could be stopped up and only running on 1 of the tanks, therefore needing to fill up after half the mileage.

Like Rub said drop the bottom of the carb and check for water and debris. Also if you have a inline fuel filter check it. Check the fuel line and be sure its not kinked. Did you put the check valve back in the tank cap? If so just take it out completely.

As mentioned check the carry over tube between the two tanks and also try losening your right side cap if it starts to stall some of the breather vents are bad in the cap and you can just remove it.

Last question and I hate to ask it but it has happened before. You are filling both tanks correct?

The connecting line between the tanks is clear, checked when I drained the tanks. Would actually like to replace the 2 tanks with a newer single Mastiff tank in the future.

Dont have an inline fuel filter, just the one on the Pingel inside the tank which was clean. Fuel line not kinked. Never did put the valve back in the cap, just tossed it. Will check the carb fuel bowl when I get a spare minute tonight or tomorrow.

I know you said you checked the crossover tube, but did you check tank opening inlet itself.

I had a very similar problem when first got mine last year & the vent inlet on the left tank was totally plugged with I think was tank sealer. It was an '04 with only 3400 miles on it & probably came from the factory that way & poor previous owner never was able to figure it out.

Hey V,
I was told, by someone who will remain nameless, that the left side gas cap is a dummy and cant be removed. Is that true? If not, I feel like a freakin idiot for not checking it sooner. Took the vent out of the gas cap two weeks ago and never put it back in.

JSUB,
Both tank inlets drain like they should, gas flows freely out of them.

No the left side is not a dummy cap. it does have left hane threads so you don't mix the two caps up.

Yep. All lot of folks are used to the Harley tanks with the gauge and it does not remove. So hope fully your prob is solved. And yes Lefty tighty and right loosey.

Just want to clarify that I was referring to the crossover vents under the panel.

Problem Solved

OK... OK I am officially a new-b dumbass! When I bought the bike I was told by the salesman that the left gas cap was a dummy. After chatting with you amazing BD Bikers on this forum I was informed that it is a functioning gas cap that unscrews opposite of the right side.

After spending 10 minutes trying to unscrew the left gas cap (that bitch was on tight) I finally got it off. I went to the gas station, held the bike level and filled up the left side and then the right. So far NO ISSUES!!! I will know for sure when I get past the 60 mile mark on the odometer...lol. Pretty damn sure the problem is solved.... if not you'll be hearing back from me.

Thanks to all for their wisdom and BD knowledge!

I suggest you lightly lube the thread on both caps and just snug them down lightly when screwing them on as the nylon tends to swell and before you know what happened you are unscrewing your paint savers out of the tank. It had already happened to both sides of my tank.
Or replace the caps with an aftermarket replacement!
