I think I went to tight on the screw on the bottom if the forks because now one just spins it doesn't get tight

The screw screws into the dampner tube which might be turning with the screw and that is why
it is sometimes recommended to use an nut runner/rattle gun but be gentle using it.

Try making sharp turns with your spanner if you know what I mean.
It worked for me in the past.
