I just figured if I still have to wipe oil off the fork there is still some left in there.....

Is this due to a leak also This is all that comes out. I can't seem to get the cones loose either tired a strap wrench with out any luck. Should I heat it up a little. Sorry for jacking the thread.

A little will be normal. What happens when you wipe them down? However when your riding down the road and you see oil on the forks starting to running up the forks from the wind then the seals are definitely leaking.

OK thanks for the post and I have not seen it ride up the fork while ridding and have been keepint and eye on it. I think my problem is that i can't get the cones off and all the oil and smug is building up in the cone.

I'd try the strap wrench again and heat it up with a hair dryer. Mine actually came right off just turning by hand with a pair of rubber gloves on.

Yea I tried rubber gloves and no good. The strap wrench was a rubber strap and not leather- I will try a leather and heat gun and go from there. Thanks erldawg

I had my fork seals and bushings replaced this past fall. Mine leak the same as phatchopper300's. I wipe em off and they look the same after next ride. They did that before I replaced em as I recall. Next year I will have to replace the upper legs. Anyone go longer on the upper legs?

I picked mine up from a local repair / parts place. If you drop by the HArley dealer just ask for a 41mm set of seals and bushings. I'd replace both while you have the forks appart.

Uh...just looking at my post on the fork seals. Doing it the way I stated is for inverted forks. I had just repaced the seals on two sets of inverted forks so I was still thinking along those lines:bang: Sometimes helps to be awake when you post.

Update: Took commerical dryer and heated them up and using strap wrench they finially broke loose. I had to use a rubber hammer also. Pain in the ass but they are loose now clean up the inside of the cones. Thanks for the sugg. it worked!!
