Floorboards for K9s

SKOGDOG

One of the old ones.
Many of you know I have both a 2008 K9 and a 2010 Bulldog Bagger. Blacktopper and I tour a lot and are always looking for ways to make a 600 mile day more comfortable. He got to looking at the beautiful chrome passenger floorboards on my Bulldog bagger and opined that he’d like to install a set of those on his 2016 330 K9.
So we called Derek and Donna (Shovelheadkicker-620-257-2009) , and lucky us—-he stocks Bulldog Bagger floorboards!
After discussing with Derek what might be involved, we figured this would certainly be possible, but due to the placement of the little retaining pins in the clevis to footpeg, the floorboard would not be anywhere near an angle for a foot to sit flat on it—either / or \. We figured that would be an easy fix, and went ahead with the project. The floorboards finally arrived, and I had to also order clevises (clevi?) because my footpegs were custom aftermarket. We put the smaller rear floorboards on Blacktopper’s bike and the longer ones from the front on mine.
Here is a pic of the longer front floorboards installed. 476657D9-7838-4190-8669-2DB7BEA02D51.jpeg

And here are the smaller rear floorboards.

The installation is actually quite simple. See the schematic below:

These instructions apply to both sides.
1. Remove bolt (18) and the footpeg.
2. Loosen large Allen Head Bolt (9). Unscrew it only until you can remove the clevis. Leave the rest of it in place.
3. Note the two pins (10) in the schematic. Those pins determine the angle of the floorboard (or footpeg) position.
Recommendation: Place a towel under the work area. Or don’t—-then see what happens. Guarantee one of those pins will do a Mexican jumping bean imitation when they hit concrete...One time I had to cut a piece of a stout coat hangar to ‘make do’ after losing one. And of course found it 20 minutes after assembly.
Another recommendation: If the little pins give you any trouble, use a tiny spot of gasket sealer.
4. Note that the pin on the outside goes in the end of (5) and is held in place by the clevis (3).
5. Attach the floorboard into the clevis—the same bolt (18) should work-it did for both our bikes, and I am confident will work for most later models BDM’s.
6. Adjust it to an angle you think will be comfortable—I recommend a slight rearward incline, as that is a natural riding position. If you are unsure, drop by a HD dealer and sit on a bagger or a Fat Boy to see how you like those floorboards and replicate that.
Once you have determined your preferred angle, simply mark the clevis and use a drill press to bore a hole for the pin (10).
7. Install and tighten the big Allen bolt to 40 ft lbs with blue.
8. This longer front floorboards have skid plates attached to the bottoms-none for the smaller rear floorboards since on the Bagger they mount higher for a passenger. And the long ones are about identical in terms of rider foot placement because all the original foot mounts are used. The smaller rear floorboards have a little longer clevis, so they sit out a little wider, maybe an inch (see second photo above).
I am pleased with this addition to my K9. Usually where adding something, it’s an issue of customization for appearance. In this case, I think they will really be an improvement in comfort too. Since we are headed to the Texas Hill Country this next week , we’ll find out soon enough.
P.S.
Roger didn’t wanna mess with the pins, so he simply removes the clevis, took the pin and placed it in his toolbox, loctited and torqued the hell out of that big Allen bolt. He’s convinced it will hold just fine. Stay tuned for how that works out. BUT—it was a ten minute job to convert his bike to the Bulldog Bagger floorboards.

Nice job. How’s vibration in the floorboards compared to the pegs? I move my foot around a lot due to vibration in my pegs.

Nice Job Rick, I asked a long time ago about putting the Bulldog bagger footpegs on my k9, BDM was still in business and they had just came out with the Bulldog bagger. They told me they wouldn't work on a k9. Looks like you and Roger proved them wrong. I like the long ones, they look good on there and will probably be more comfortable.

Thanks. I definitely agree. The issue is the placement of the holes in the axles. There is no configuration of the existing pre-drilled holes that will result in the correct position of the floorboards, but it is simple enough to drill a hole. If you look at the schematic, you can see it is possible to do that on either end of the axle or simply take off the clevis and drill it there-basically anywhere there is one of those little pins gets seated (thanks for that tip, Blacktopper).
I’m surprised no one has done this yet. And if you have ever had a close up look at these floorboards, you know what good quality they are. Really beautiful.

Nice job! I always wanted to put Stirrups on my 03. But could never get it to work. Even though they are "Harley Controls," the cleavice was always too long.

Interesting! Nice work! I was actually thinking about something similar however not a large floorboard just a mini.

Something like this one... https://www.denniskirk.com/joker-ma...inerid=dk-recommendations&rectype=Alternative

When you guys going to be coming through Dallas? During the week or weekend? Would be great to see you two! Hopefully we can meet up. I also hope the weather is nice for y'all! It's been hit it miss lately, nice during the week and crummy on weekends! It's only 39 degrees this AM, won't even break 60 today

The ones with the rubber coating will give you less vibration

Yea, I'm not worried about the vibration actually hell that's part of the ride! One of my big dogs didn't have rubber at all on the footpegs, vibration is not a concern it's just feet slipping off with a big gust of wind.

Also just thinking for longer hauls the 400-500+ mile days gives me more options for feet placement.

Foot placement options are definitely nice. Brewery hopping vs 400+ miles tells the tale.

We leave KS on Wednesday. For the TX Hill country—gonna ride the Three Twisted Sisters this week. We have been out that way on occasion, but nneverriden the route all at once.
I’ll report back how they work out, but I’m pretty confident those floorboards will work out to be one of the best changes ever.

Awesome !! I have not ridden that far yet. Too cold to start early enough :)

What days specifically are y'all going to be here ? I'd like to meet too. I haven't found any other members here in town.

I could probably even swing a day off work if we can coordinate. PM me if you're interested and I'll give you my contact info.

Sure—we plan to be in Dallas on Wed evening, hopefully getting to see Th3Infamous1 that afternoon, then on south to Kerrville (or Medina) on Thursday afternoon. Afterwards, we’ll wander back north towards home.

UPDATE:
Today we left Pittsburg KS and rode south headed for Dallas. We made good time and were ahead of schedule and Eric (Th3 Infamous1) was stuck at work, so unhappily we didn’t get to see him. We pressed on and wound up a ways south of Ft. Worth for the night.
After 400+ miles today, I can tell you that the floorboards are a hit!! Big time. My Bulldog Bagger is comfortable to ride because of the fairing and the floorboards. It’s nice. But the K9 of course gives you all the wind. And today there was a 20 mph headwind—-all day. At 75+ mph (sustained), the wind tends to blow your knees outwards and that requires effort to keep your feet on pegs—it’s worse if they are chrome. If you have ever had your foot blown off a footpeg from a bypassing semi, you know what I mean. The floorboards really help with that dynamic, probably because the entire sole of your boot makes contact with the rubber floorboard. And of course you can move your feet forwards and back a few inches to change position too.
I couldn’t be more pleased. It is a very classy mod for my K9 (the chrome/rubber is beautiful), and take it from a guy who logs in a few miles, they are functional. I think these floorboards would adapt on other newer BD models in exactly the same way it did for my bike (and Roger’s too). This is because the footpegs all interchangeable and mount the same way.
Tomorrow we’ll head south to the 3 Sisters ride and tell the tale on how these floorboards act with some cornering and sweepers......I cant wait.
