First 500 miles .. then what!

I hoping all you dog owners having made it past the first 500 miles can offer some suggestions for this newbie.

Except for the forward control option and a windscreen (I know it doesn't look all that cool but with bugs the size of birds it does help) its 100% stock. During the first 500 it sneezed at bit at 2500 rpm all the way to 3000 rpm when holding a constant speed so from the responses it needs to be enriched a bit - my dealer/wrench says he can install the jet kit used when changing pipes and air cleaners and even stock it will work just fine. Any thoughts, is this guy right they can install the jet kit and all will be well. I want to be sure the wrench knows what he's doing and where better to check. I will have them install the oil cooler at the same time. As for Pipes, after reading all the blogs I am not all the comfortable making a decision just yet - the V&H Big Radus Two into One looks appealing as its not too much louder than stock which my neighbors appreciate having had a set of Rinehardts on my Fat Boy. I also spoke with Vicki before she fell ill and ordered a K&N airfilter which I will install after the wrench is done.

So far I have to say the dog has worked well, doesn't idle too well and the oil light flickers when stopped at a light but a little throttle cure that until the wrench makes adjustments. I do enjoy reading the interaction and gather knowledge - thanks guys!!

Make sure your wrench man knows his crap. Many so-called shops will screw it upYou may be able to just adjust the carb without changing jets. Some guys on here may steer you to a great shop by you. (please remove windshield) LOL.:nono:

Slowrower;

Nice look'n ride buddy. Tell anybody that gives you a hard time about the windscreen to "Fuck Off" they ain't ridden in your conditions, it ain't their bike, so they don't know what the fuck they're spout'n about.

That said, your idle seting is too low if you're oil lite is flickering. What is your tach reading warm at idle. Should be at two bars, though these LED tachs can be off by 250 RPM. When sitting on the bike, look at the carb. The nearest screw is the idle speed. Give it a 1/8-1/4 turn clockwise to raise the idle a bit till you can get it adjusted by a wrench.

On that issue, unlesss your aircleaner and pipes have been changed from stock, the carb should only need adjusted. No rejetting is needed -- only if you change the ins and outs (intake, exhaust).

Have fun with the ride!

if they are ordering you a jet kit... it will come with the whole high range set of jets. Make sure they give you all the other jets. the jet kit is about $35-$40

But the changing jets and swapping your exhaust are so simple you shouldn't pay the wrench to do it.

Anytime slow. I have a pic for almost everything and it will get worse if I do get to do my own tear down of the dog this winter.

500 Mile Service Complete

Had the 500 mile service today, the wrench adjusted the carb and the sneezing is gone! I watched him screw the adjuster all the way in and back it out just like the S&S G Carb instructions said!.. hurray runs much better... no jet needed quite yet. I also ordered dual oil coolers recommended by the BDM factory dude, said it will help a bunch. One question I had is the BDM tech said Synthetic Oil would make the dog noiser than the dino stuff - any one hear a difference. Also asked why they don't pump the last 1/2 qt or so during the first oil change and I got a puzzled look. Guess I do this one myself!

Probably a Kalifornia bike. My 03 and 05 had two! One is meeting C.A.R.B. requirements. :job:

I just found this site and found your post about the poor service you received from me on the parts you ordered....I'm so sorry...I got sick like overnight and didn't have my ducks in a row about making sure orders got shipped etc. Please give me a call...I still have the order here and would love to get it out to you if you haven't already placed it elsewhere...

Anytime anybody needs carb dialing in instructions over the phone call me...it's REALLY simple or better yet I can send you a carb instuction manual free of charge so you have the actual book in front of you...I definately don't think a jet change is needed after the 500 mile unless you change pipes, air cleaners etc. Just like always advice is free so call me...

As far as Mobil 1 is concerned..I think it's a matter of preference. I know people that swear by syntheic and others that can tell you horrow stories. S&S does however send Mobil 1 syn with their motors now and recommends it's use...I personally use regular 20w50 but I've got a worn out motor thats on it's last leg and I hate to rock the boat...

I had a '93 Vette running Mobil 1. That car was faster at 100,000 miles then it was at 48,000 when I bought it. I think syn is the only way to go on a newer motor after it is broken in. An with an air cooled motor, it's only going to help IMO.

And around 70 mph, I don't hear the motor over the wind noise anyway.
