final drive belt adjustment

tried to do a search & looked in my service manual, both unclear, how do you check final drive belt, how much deflection should you have & where do you check it ? also how close should the belt be to the edge of tire? how do you adjust the belt & keep rear tire tracking true, my belt is real close to tire but dosen't appear to be touching, looks like less than a 1/8 in maybr 1/16in deflects about 1/2 in or so, checking from bottom of belt in front of wheel pulley, havent measured just eyeballing, just wondering, any input would be helpfull !!!!

as long as the belt is not hitting the tyre you should be fine. To get rear wheel tracking true just take a measurement from centre of axle on each side to say, swing arm pivot bolt, or get the little copper wire thingy. Adjust the adjusting screws either side (loosen the axle bolt first of course). Job done.

You can run your belt with little up & down movement. Your bike being a ridged nothing moves back there. as long as the wheel is straight and the belt is off the tire your good. Spin the tire see how the belt is tracking.

how much belt deflection shoud I have, its still unclear, it looks fine but another biker @ local bar said it was way to lose,& to close to tire, dont know if he really knows, trust opinons here better

My service manual has the whole procedure in it!
Make your own tool to verify trueness. I copied one made by chucktx. Just a coat hanger and a small zip tie.
Then pick a point thats equal on both sides of the frame and measure away.
And don't worry about the belt tire clearance. Even if it did rub the tire would wear way before the belt did.

If you adjust the drive belt to 3/4" movement with 10 lbs of force the slightest throttle twist a the belt will skip on the pulley and you will feel it. It's not a Harley it's a Baker right side drive tranny with a monster size bearing. Tighten the belt to around 3/16". Yes 3/16". That would trash a Harley tranny but remember its dog a Big Dog. Also proper alignment must be perfect. Close wont cut it. Unless you like a chirping squealing noise to drive you insane.
