Factory speedo upgrade info

I think most everyone has had problems with the stock speedometer fogging up and/or dying. I had the fogging problem, now it's only working about 1/2 the time. Plus, I just don't like the look of the Dakota digital, so I was stuck.

When I was in Dallas 2 weeks ago at Strokers, they had numerous 2011 models and they all had a new style speedometer (looks sortof like the 2009/2010 wolf's). I asked their parts dept if they had them, nope...

I called BDM factory today and asked about the new speedo for my 2009 Mastiff. What I got was good news. BDM is currently working on a retrofit upgrade called "Medallion Speedometer retrofit kit" for putting this on the older dogs. AND it's about ready. Did not get a price or pin them down on when, but you guys must let me be 1st in line since I spilled the beans here.

I did price out the entire 2009 wolf speedo/housing and Iron Lightning said it was a little over $300 (tempting to buy it). The 2011 Mastiff/K9's had it in what looks like the same housing as we currently have but the dial face has only the outer chrome ring on it, not inner/outer like we have.

Maybe we can get Lena at Strokers to take a picture and see if she can get more concrete info on price and date (Hey Lena, you are reading this, right?)

Sorry pal,
Those of us that were at Sturgis got this tidbit a month ago, however you can be the first to try it, as I love the digital version.

Let us know if you find out more.
I like the look of the speedo I have now with the Bigdog logo.
Does this other one have a logo on it?

For those with speedos that only work sometimes.... I thought mine was broke too. I took it in for repair and come to find out, if the battery is getting weak the speedometer doesn't work. I wasn't using a battery tender at the time. This would happen always after the bike was sitting for prolonged periods of time. I would get on it, start riding and notice the speedo was registering zero. I would stop, shut off the bike, cycle the ignition switch, start riding again and that would fix it. It would start working properly because I had ridden the bike and charged the battery.

I don't know if this is your problem or not, but wanted to put it out there. This info was obtained from Gateway Big Dog in St. Louis and BDM engineers. According to the BDM guys this is normal behavior for my 06 k9.

And yes, I want one of those new speedos too.

Mine did the same thing when I started it while the speedo was doing its system check. If you start it after the speedo does its thing, it will be fine.
I have an 07' and under warranty the dealer flashed the EHC with a later version and the speedo does a double sweep and I haven't seen the problem since and that was 2 yrs ago. I think the 2nd sweep occurs after the bike is started so it doesn't see the voltage draw while the starter is engaged.

Ive seen the new speedo first hand at the factory and I gotta say when it becomes available I am buying it. It has a real time tach so you can see what your rpms really are and it gets rid of all the out dated looking idiot lights around the speedo. It is a solid metal housing and made by Medallion which only makes quality equipment. Now if you like the digital look the Dakota is the shit but I really like the clean smooth look of this new speedo.

The speedo was one of the very first things I replaced on my scooter and it fogged from the very first day. I will replace it again if it looks like everyone says it does.

Anyway, after all these years of doing the speed limits, for the most part, , I have come to the conclusion that those signs are just suggestions for people in mini vans to drive "At Least This Fast".

I also think I would want my next brand new speedo to read up to 180-200 mph, not just 120 mph.

Speedo of my 09 HD Rocker C is also fogging .

What do you complain about  . HD isn't any better in quality, but power and look sucks :flag:.

On the fogging issue - I took my speedo apart. First - I used some cat snot (anti-fogging) stuff I bought at a bike rally all over the inside of the lens. Next - The 2 wires going in the housing I surrounded by a rubber gromet from Napa. Then a glob of silicon on top of that. It sealed it from the inside. Seems to have fixed the fogging problem. I do plan on replacing mine the next time it quits.

Hope this helps...

On the new speedo, the outer numbers are either MPH or RPM (selectable). The one NOT selected shows up in the digital window. It really looks so much better than the old style.

Made by Medallion, I was not able to find any Medallion guage that looks like it so it must be brand new or strictly a BDM part.
