Exhaust circlip pliers

Energy One
I have searched for this to no avail. I need the correct type of circlip pliers to remove and reinstall the exhaust flange circlips. The kind I have look like this:

These work for shit. I would have put an eye out if not for safety glasses, and if I have to use them again I'll probably end up maiming someone for scolding me about my salty language. This has led me to believe I'm using the wrong pliers. Could someone please post a pic of the correct ones, or a link to a source for the correct ones? I checked Sears, Harbor Freight and Lowes and I couldn't find anything other than what I already have.

Thanks in advance. :2thumbs:

Good morning.
Not sure about what it is you are trying to remove or where it is...but I believe those pliers are (for what you are referring to as circlips) for circlips that are a thin metal ring that is like the letter "O" with a small portion cut out, and tiny holes near the end of the cut out. The little holes are where the nose of your pliers fit. You pinch the "o" together slightly...and then insert the "circlip" into a thin groove. The "circlips" are used to hold in items like bushings...like the bushings on a universal joint on a car drive train. There is another type of "circlip" (hose clamp) that goes on the OUTSIDE of items...like a radiator hose. For best results you use a tool that looks just like a pair of regular old pliers....except the pliers have half round grooves cut in each half of both the end and side of the pincher portion of the plier to assist you in removing the clamp. Forgive me if this information is absolutely worthless/confusing for your application. I've not seen the first type of "circlips" I am referring to on an exhaust system...but that certainly does not mean they are not there. Good luck my friend...and keep those safety glasses on.

ratman, when you remove the exhaust from the head, the flange slides down out of the way and the circlip is inside the flange. that is what the flange tightens up against to hold the pipes in place.

malefic, can't think of any other pliers specific for doing this job. all i can tell you is to hold your hand around the circlip when expanding it to keep it from flying all over the place. good luck.:cheers:

I only change a few sets a year so I just use 2 pair of locking vice grips, one on each side of the clip, very carefully spread them apart till it slips off. never damaged one yet, there probbly is a right tool to do it with but this works for me,

those are snap ring pliers you have there.i have used them time and time again for the exhaust snap rings.i spread them apart, get one side over the pipe and work it around.sometimes a pocket screw driver will help.becareful it should help.

Thanks all. I'll try the vice grips, I've got a couple sets of those.:2thumbs:

Makes ya wonder why they didn't use a snap with the holes in the ends.........:loony:

putting holes on the ends would be to easy.the ends are however grooved slightly to help but tricky.good luck:cheers:

Thanks Marv. I just found a set at Sears. Not exactly like that, but they have knurled flats instead of pins. In any case, it looks like I won't need them after all.

I have a set at home that I can post a pic of later, They look about like the ones above that BikersDream posted but mine have padded handles.

Mine work great for the exhaust rings.
