Something to think about

When it comes to oil filtration, what is considered unfit? Micron specification may be illusive when it comes to what is actually needed.
An example would be smaller air cooled engines that have no filtration and they run Babbitt bearings.
These engines are the most abused of all! for example (lawn mowers) how often does the oil get changed in these engines?
They run wide open (against the governor) at all times in one hostile environment.
Some Automobiles never used an oil filter at all.
So what would be the minimum micron requirement for our application?
It seams as though the manufactures don't build a filter that meets there own specs.
Outside of drain back and bypass specifications it may just be irrelevant?
I would have some concerns about one's ability to successfully clean the wire mesh type of filter...

Wow - this good information - I read the whole thread a few times and still a bit unsure...., I have an 04 BigDog Chopper, bought it used, previous owner had a K&N 171 on it for it's whole life (17K miles). It's an Evo, not sure if top end is Twin Cam type (never knew it could be). So should I dump the K&N 171 and just go with a K&P? Or at least switch to the K&N 170...?
Also, I have a 07 Harley Springer Softail (twin cam 96), sounds like I should run a K&P on that too, so......., maybe I can just run a K&P on both my bikes and don't have to worry about it anymore?

I bought both my Big Dogs at Coast Choppers in San Diego and all they ever used was the 171C. I put many miles commuting 100 miles a day and never had an issue with them.
But the 170 is designed for your motor so if it's available you should get it.

I wouldn't worry about the wire mesh filters either. Most vehicles on the road today; ships, planes; trains ect..... use similar type filters and I've had mine on my 05 Chopper since 05 and put many miles on the motor with no issues.
