I hate to say it but the way things are today it may be a signal that hey my buddy is hiding in the bushes and we are waiting for some dumb ass to stop so we can steal his bike or worse.

I figured it would be the same as a car, hang a rag or t-shirt off of it. But if its really broke down, maybe you want to just walk away and hope someone steals it anyway.

If I see a bike on the side of the road, I usually stop and ask if they need help.

One time I stopped, a guy was on the side of the road (in a parking lot) needing a helmet. Turns out he was from Texas and working temporarily in Alabama, and didn't know about Alabama law requiring helmets. He made it to work fine and got stopped on the way back to hotel. I didn't have a helmet with me but his friends were already bringing him one back from the hotel, he had brought a helmet just in case but didn't keep it on the scooter. The good thing was that the cop didn't give him a ticket, and the guy did indeed wait for his friends to bring him a helmet.
