Eratic speedo?

First ride after getting my bike back from the dealer & back together, I noticed the speedo needle was very eratic. All they supposedly done was replace the circit breaker with the in-line fuse. Any wires in that area that might affect the speedo? I've done a search but found nothing about my problem. Tach lights work fine. Its not all over the dial, just continually jumps 5 to 10 mph lower & higher than my speed. Its always worked fine and was pretty accurate(checked it with my hh gps)Any ideas?

Bought the bike used so not sure about the speedo. Dont know about normal but I have read alot of threads about speedo troubles. It has always worked fine until I took it to the shop. Gonna clean the sensor when I get a minute. Dont know that it'll help but it cant hurt.

:hi: check with your dealer and have them run your VIN to see if the speedo was changed out along with the new speedo mount (bigger, beefier, better). might work out for you to get a new one that does not bounce around as bad..:2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Your going about it all wrong. First throw away the GPS. Second twist the throttle up until the needle starts to go all the way around. Third, if one and two didnt fix it, sounds normal then.:D

Butcher, dont have a whole lot of confidence in my dealer. Didn't buy the bike from them so they dont seem overly joyed about doing anything to my bike that doesn't cost me. Gas, speedo mount is like the smaller one so I assume it hasn't been changed out. I can live with it if I have to but for the 1500 or so miles I've put on the bike, it has worked flawlessly until I got it back from the shop. Coincidence I guess?... Thumper, you're right. When I crank on it pretty hard I should to be watching the road, not the speedo. lol

Thats the problem. They said they took care of everything that was under recall. (which according to them was nothing but the in-line fuse for the VR) Guess with certain dealers you have to bitch a little to get them to do their job.......... On another note, my key broke off in the switch. It never would come out in the "ON" position as some have posted. I can still crank & cut off the bike with small screwwdriver, knife blade, finger nail clippers, etc. Does Nelson have access or do I need to go directly to BDM to get a replacement? What info do I need to give them. Haven't tried to get the broke part out. How much trouble should that be? Thanks guys!!!

I also purchased my K9 used. Speedometer started bouncing all over the place. BDM replaced mine free of charge. Got the new bracket and speedometer, works great now.

I wonder if the dealer washed your bike when they were through. I ruined a speedo once on my dog that way. Now i rubber glove it if i spray water. I'd ask em if they washed it and if they own upto it...bust their ass!

No TJ, they really didn't do anything but install the fuse inplace of the breaker. And cost me 6 hrs drive time, about $80 in fuel, and one day loss of use......The owner is a friend of a friend and he said to bring it up and they would take care of it. That was when I thought I was under warranty. I took it up with the exhaust, starter, side covers, clutch rod pulled, seat off, battery compartment loose and all the nuts and bolts in a box. (told him I would put it back together first but dealer said that would save him time) Didn't wanna but left it assuming they were gonna put a new starter on it. Called the next day and they said warranty was void on the original purchase date and BDM was not going to help me  I went and picked it up just as I took it to him. He said he had done all the recalls and when I asked what that was, he told me the fuse thing. He even wanted to put it back together for me for 2hrs labor. Heck, I can take it all apart and put it back together in 1-1/2hrs with the bike on the sidestand and my a$$ on a sheetrock bucket. OK, I'm thru .

RVH,

By chance did you ever get a hold of BDM and get a history to see what recalls have been actually done on your BD. I know that you mention the VR, but with so little miles on yours, when you purchased, and the warranty not being good, may want to verify that all the recall for your specific BD have been done for there is many from Kick stand spring, wheel hubs, and numerous electrical.

If you haven't, may be a good idea to ask BDM to send you a complete history of what has been done on it to be on safe side.

Thanks Fiber. The dealer pulled up the history online but I never seen it. He told me to leave the bike and he would do all the outstanding recalls. When I picked it up and asked what had been done, he said only the fuse thing. I had no way of actually knowing but will call /email/contact BDM some time next week. You guys have a good one and be safe. I'm offline for the weekend

I have an 05' Chop and had to go thru about 4 speedo's. ALL of them were as you describe or just didn't work half the time. I still have the 4th one that was acting up working only half the time but I had to change my battery. Changing my battery seems to have solved the 50/50 problem and the damn thing works properly now. Even my dealer is saying the other bikes have been fixed this way. Was that really the cure? I don't really know but I did all the work myself and it's fixed. Hope this helps. Marc

Got an email back form Anne Dixon who states there is no recall on the speedometer.

-------------------------------------------------------------
"We do not have a recall on the speedometers. I show that your bike was
at Xtreme Customs in Simpsonville for recalls and service bulletins.
Was this work performed?

To fix your speedo, a firmware update needs to be done to your EHC.
This is proprietary software and only accessible to the dealers and
service centers.

Please provide your address and I can see if we have any service
centers
in your area."

Anybody ever had this problem fixed by this method?

I had similar issues until I contact the factory direct, 48 hours later I had the owner of my dealership calling me to get my '07 K9 in. The story then went from all recalls have already performed to the following;

New Struts and bolts
New Sissy Bar
New ECH
New Computer pack
New Tach board
New speedo p/u
New Speedo gasket
New primary gaskets

All free of charge............

That was 1,000 miles ago and now the speedo is acting up again and the speedo is fogging. KC told me that they are currently finishing up on designing a new vacumed speedo seal system and my VIN as well as others would be notified for the upgrade when available.
