Engine turning but not starting?

So I tried starting the bike this morning with no results. The battery sounds strong after charging all night. I did notice something I had not noticed yesterday. I have a gurgling noise coming from the air filter carb. area of the bike. It sounds like a backed up drain gurgling after the first turn over of the engine, any ideas on what that could be? :bang:

i'm just being the devil's advocate here so don't throw anything. the enrichener lever is all the way down, isn't it???? if not, it would cause the carb to flood and the plugs to foul big time. and probably the gurgling sound.

Hey, just to throw this out there but my wife's Triumph would not start and finally ran like shit. It ran out of gas on the way to fill up the tank. Damn Ethanol gas sucks. I ain't using that shit any more.:bang::angry:

Bike didn't start the morning after a full charge and new plugs? Then it just randomly started later in the afternoon? What else did you do?

Kudos to getting the bike going just curious what the root cause was.

I got it started and rode about 40 miles today. :2thumbs: I think I had a bad plug, it ran great today :D
Cool Sherry ....I like the fact that you can wrench on your own bike .... so i'm going to hit you with a little "Rep Power"

are you still having the blinker problem ?

Spark plug wont cause it to crank slowly, a bad plug will cause crank but no start or runs bad, what it sounds like is the battery/starter system problem.

Five,
yep blinkers are still a problem but I am hoping to get the WP in a few weeks and hope that will solve the problem. Thanks for the extra rep power.
Nuke,
I don't know if I am such a great wrencher but I guess you could say it isn't going to fix it's self so I am not scared to screw it up some more lol! If I make it worse there is always the trailer, load it up and take her to the shop lol! That is how I have learned what little I know so far.

stacey, not to beat a dead horse, but in the past i bought a new battery and it crapped out on me the first time i went for a ride. took it back and they replaced it with another one of the same manf./size that they charged overnight on a deep cycle charger. it crapped out also. just because the battery is new doesn't mean it's a good battery.
the video gave me the feeling the battery was low or the connections were not good, maybe just the compression too much for the battery. either way there's not enough juice to crank it over.

try taking the plugs out and seeing how well it turns over. ( i'm just throwing out ideas and feel free to ignore them. it won't hurt my feelings in the least.)

Hi Tom,
I get the same feeling but does this simply mean I need to go to more cca? The one I have now is 310 and if it died that quick (which I am not saying it can't,very possible) I guess I need at least try it so I can rule it out......or ride!

With no compression releases on your bike you really need to have alot of CCA ... Here is what I run, and it cranks..

the batteries i was talking about were interstate rated at 310/320 cca and, come to find out, all they were was re-badged 270 cca yuasa brand. no improvement from the original, just lied to about the cca. my suggestion is to go with the best you can afford, whether it be H-D, Braille (what I have), Big Boar, or even one of the new lithium-ion ($$$$$). just research and make sure of what you are getting.

not on a bike, but in the past, i have had the experience of corrosion building up INSIDE the insulation of the battery cables where it was not visible. everything looked good but i could not find the source of my problem, until i tried flexing the cables from one end to the other and found a hard/stiff spot. ohm out your cables/wires and see what they read. should be -0-.

Stacey was the starter that you replaced new or a rebuild? I listened to the You Tube start and the battery sounds like it's in the shits or the starter doesn't cut the mustard. The winning sound makes me tend to lean toward a bad battery. If you're experiencing no other electrical issues, my money is on the EHC still being OK though. You could always have the battery load tested. That would tell you for sure.:2thumbs:

Clicking sound is tell tell low/dead battery....Voltage does not mean anything other than it has (X) amount of volts. You need CCA to turn a starter and that is why a load test is a must. Get a battery load tester or take it in to be tested. A volt meter will not give you enough info.
The whine sound is comming from the starter that does not have enough juice to turn. I have heard this too many times..Bad thing is low voltage can hurt things...If the're any weak links in the electrical system low voltage can be a killer. I have seen it melt the posts on more than one battery that did not have a good contact as well as take out the windings on a starter.
BTW if you can get a battery that comes with the acid in a pack and is empty. Fill it when you get it and use a good 25 amp charger to charge it over night. That way you are getting a good NEW battery and not just one that has been sitting on the shelf for who knows how long. Remember Heat/Cold are battery killers.

I agree with Bobby, your video sounds like a weak battery. That battery sounds too weak to turn that motor over and that sound is the starter struggling to turn but it's not got enough power to turn the motor. What brand battery are you running in the scoot? Another thing of intrest is, you said the scoot was running the other day? How long did you let it run? Might want to check out your charging system and make sure it's charging that new battery. Just a thought...:2thumbs:

The battery I have in the bike is a Duralast (p.o.s. sounds like lol) with 310 cca. I am going to pull it out this morning and see if I can get my money back :argue:. With that said I am going to order one like Five has and hopefully that will fix my problem. I was just hoping to get in some riding time while I am off work for the Holidays. I have to return to work Monday and the high temp here on Tuesday is only going to be 35*, :( looks like winter might have arrived.

The battery that Five is running will take care of any doubts about cca and having enough 465:eek:. hope that get's you back on the road.

P. S. Will you marry me:roll:
