I have a 2006 Pitbull with just under 3000 miles on it. I bought it back in october and have not rode any until this past friday. When i start my bike up everything if fine but after i go down the road and come to a stop I have what sounds like a ticking noise coming from the engine. Someone told me it may need the valves adjusted. Has anyone had any experience with this? I had an 02 with the 107 motor and I never had a sound like this.

The 117's tick. I had it with mine, adjusted the pushrods, and still the same ticking. I have a 2005 I'm working on with only 3k miles on it, and it's ticking like a motherfucker. Synthetic oil is supposed to help, and you could try some of that synthetic oil additive, ugh it's late and I can't remember the name, but I use it and have some in the garage. Do a search on this and you will find a lot of info. Some guys did have some issues with TP parts, rockers I think? Anyway, by 2006 I think this was corrected. Did the ticking just start?

if you have a 06....you might have the TP rocker boxes on it......I had the TP's on my 06 K-9 and mine made more top end noise than usual.....last year the dealer replaced my heads...rockers and valve train to S&S.....now its alot quieter:up: they found one of my guides were out of tolerance...so everything was replaced under warranty:whoop:

Thanks for all the information. I bought this bike back in October but I just stated riding because I had my other bike up for sale. The tick has been in the bike since I started riding it. Thank you for the picture but I will have to look at my bike and see which ones I have but I am pretty sure I have the S&S just from looking at this picture. Thanks.

ive got a 07 k9 with s&s heads, red valve springs, 7k on bike, and still ticks
I took the opportunity to "redo" my heads as well...
I still have some topend noise, but much less than before, even with a more aggressive CAM:up:

On the Harley I just make sure the valves are properly adjusted and then put in the earplugs... :D

Some 117's have a upper end tick due to excessive valve guide wear... What causes the wear is not 100% decided on... is it the TP boxes or just the way they were installed.... They fit looser than the S&S .. either way the repair has included replacing the TP Boxes with the S&S in addition to the guide replacement.. Just had mine done..
If you have the S&S try adjusting the valves..

I have an 05 chopper and it sounds like a sewing machine. Adjusted valves and changed to Mobile 1 sysnthetic, noise quited down some. Put louder exhaust on and don't hear it as much now. My buddy has an 06 k9 and I can hardly hear his valve train. Both mine and his have the TP rocker boxes. I wonder if his has S&S rocker arms vs. TP, don't know but my plan is to change mine to full S&S soon including valve size.

The 05 manual had a footnote that stated if excesssive valve train noise was evedent the valve adjustment could be changed from 4 turns past zero lash to 3 turns past zero lash. I think this helps and several members have done this.:hi:

I install about 10oz. of Lucas oil additive with every oil/filter change. Helps keep the oil on the cylinder walls and other parts if it sits a few days. Helps it run cooler as well due to less friction. Works for me-
