engine oil leak (help)

I just installed a KRATA open primary, on 06 k-9. after I ran engine a little to check things out, I noticed alittle oil leaking, it is coming from between the new open primiary backing plate and the engine. I no there has to be a seal where crank shaft comes out, the big dog shop manual has almost nothing about how to replace that seal. It may be just alittle left over oil from going from a wet to dry primiary, but if it isn't I will have to remove the new open primiary and replace seal. so if anyone has done this maybe you could help so I am not going into this blind. thanks you in advance.

Did you pull your rotor off and hose it out? Primary oil hides up in the rotor and stator. I installd one without cleaning it out and it leaked only for awhile. I've installed 3 belt drives and never had to change the seal.

sailor is correct. Mine would not stop leaking until I installed new seal. From my understanding they only work 1 way.Something to due with fluid on both sides verse only 1 now.

thanks everyone I have removed everything and am at seal, even before install the new open primary it seemed like I was loosing alittle oil, I am thinking it may have been leaking into the primary that is why I have never been able to find leakage it was not showing on the outside. the seal is only 3 0r 4 dollars, I was told to screw in a couple dry wall screws and ridge a little slide hammer and it should pop out. If anyone has a better way please let me no. thanks again bruce

Bruce, buy a few of them your sure to fuck a couple up on install. I had a tool made to help install easier, I'm sure they sell some kind of tool for it. Its a bitch to get them in straight with out damaging it.

All valid and very help full info....(Just wish you gave it a chance to see if the leak eventually stopped - sometimes I repeat sometimes; not always it is just residue from the wet primary. This happens in TWO areas - The Rotor what U R experiencing now and the other around the starter....)
When installing it is always a good idea to pull the rotor by using two bolts screwed onto the rotor and pulling evenly. Then clean-flush it out with an Eletrical Cleaner - I know a little too late but for those who may go down this road later

So now that you have it open....NO MATTER WHAT and WHO ....install the seal the the other way around. This is clearly stated and documented in the S&S engine guide...for DRY primaries the seal is fitted flat side out.

Now about installing the seal - no expert or experience but am certain about this - you need "some" contraption that will push the seal in evenly...just off memory I think you can use a flat piece of metal with a large enough hole in the center - something like a huge giant washer....insert the seal followed by the washer and tighten the shaft nut until the seal is flushed in tight against the case....You might want to use a spacer between the washer and the nut, just in case the threads do not allow you to thigten the nut all the way, pushing the seal in flush....

Finally some help and input from the members please...when inserting the seal what grease, glue, compund, oil, does one use if any?

Hope that helps....and yes get a couple of seals you may need them...Good luck:up:
